Were Marines ever issued shotguns in the Pacific? I got my new issue of WW2 monthly & there's a picture of a squad on patrol through the jungle & I swear the guy in the lead has a short-barrelled pump.

If yes, were they standard issue in platoons? How many would be issued?

Thanks

The Winchester M1897 was used in the First and Second WWs. Cool thing about the Trench Model was that it fired on each pump (no trigger disconnect). So you could blast away!

I don't know about how many per squad.

I think in Vietnam as well, but I know the Remington 870 was used some in the Vietnam war also.

I had no idea- although it makes sense. I imagine if you heard "Banzaii!!" being screamed through the thick of jungle were you can't see very far in front of you, a 12-gauge would be a nice toy to have. However, a Thompson would be nice too..

thanks, Mark.

In "The Thin Red Line," it shows a soldiers using a shotgun at one point. O and here is a pic I found of a Marine with one on what seems to be Tarawa:
