View Full Version : 2008 Die Cast Buys of the Week

We will start our third year of featuring certain die cast items each week. During 2007 we posted over 210 selections, including a few items which appeared more than once over the year. Those selections came from at least 40 different vendors. Our mission is to provide an independent voice--highlighting some of the best values each week to the military die cast collector.

It is probably true that such an effort can never be completely objective. What we like, may not be exactly what you like, in terms of model type, scale, quality, manufacturer or other factors. That said; we try to include selections for both the most serious and budget minded collectors. We have certain dealers who have established outstanding reputations for product, prices and customer service. So these vendors probably receive more views than some others in the process of making our selections each week. There is also at least one vendor who we have never featured, due to poor customer service and relations experienced with him. Other dealers are outstanding in most respects--and may even have the very best customer service, but tend to have higher prices and few, if any, reduced price sales. As a result, their products tend to be recommended less than those with good products and outstanding prices, even if their customer service is of a lower quality.

We use the term "die cast" somewhat liberally, as we feature not only traditional die cast items, but also resin and mostly plastic items as well. The keys are that each featured item come pre-painted and requires either little or no assembly.

The first selections for 2008 are about to posted...

We hope that everyone is having a happy beginning to 2008, and that the Christmas and holiday bills have not eaten up all your die cast money.

We'll start our new year with one of the runner-ups for 2007 die cast of the year "awards" posted on a recent thread in this section. One of Corgi's best is the 1:72 scale Catalina, and the best of all the liveries of this bird is the hard to get (especially at a reasonable price) "Black Cat". The best pictures of it are from Tim's Unofficial Corgi site.

Motormint has this fantastic bird for $69.98. I advise calling to order one, as Motormint has been known to sit on their internet orders. See it here:

Our second airplane selection is also a Corgi 1:72 scale plane, but is from the modern era. It is a UK Sepecat Jaguar in Test Pilot School livery. Diecast Direct has three left and the tuition is $19.98. Diecast Direct will not allow me to show their picture, so we'll have to turn again to Tim.

It's now time to get down and dirty--or maybe play in the snow with our two tank picks. Both are winter livery from World War II.

This first is 1:30 scale New Model Army Linx in white camo.

New Model Army WWII Winter Lynx and Commander
This set from New Model Army is a WWII German version of the Panzer II nicknamed the "Lynx". This version is painted in winter camo scheme and comes with a partial figure commander. Item #NMAWintLynx

Alsand's has one to park in your snow bank, if you have the $40.00. Get to it here:

This week our picks include two very rarely done machines--one on the ground and one in the air.

We'll start with picks for fold who like their die cast vehicles solidly on the ground. The first is an oldie but a goodie that is now difficult to find. It's a 1:35 scale W. Britain U.S Sherman with a 76 mm gun. You can still order it from BT Soldiers for $40.00.

Our next selection is the rarely done early war Panzer 38 (t). It is a 1:32 scale 21st Century product that Bad Cat says is incoming very soon and can be yours for $19.99.

http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/badcattoys_1985_14019056

1:32 plastic and diecast composite tank.

The German Sd.Kfz. 140 Panzer 38(t) Light Tank was adopted by the German Wehrmacht from a Czechoslovakian design, the 38(t) played a significant role during the early part of WWII before its small stature and light armor made it obsolete as a battlefront tank. The 38(t) was equipped with a 37 mm Skoda A7 main gun and two 7.92 mm machine guns. This highly detailed model comes with many fantastic features including rotating wheels and tracks, rotating turret, elevating guns, and operable hatches.

It's now the turn of airplane collectors. We start with a Corgi 1:72 B-25 from Perry's at just $44.95. It's a "Black 310" from the 1944 Southwest Pacific. Tim's great Unofficial Corgi site has some great pictures. We'll feature one and link you to others.

The big news this week is that the Flying Mule is having an inventory reduction sale. A number of our picks will be from that event.

From that sale is our first armor pick. Made by Corgi in the 1:50 scale, we feature a M3 AA Halftrack from 1951 Korea. The Mule has them for $24.99.

US Army 25th AAA Btn, Korea, 1951
Limited Edition

1:50 Scale Length Width M3 Half-Track 4.75" 1.75"
Most US Army infantry divisions deployed to Korea had an AAA battalion consisting of eight M15A1 combination gun motor carriages (CGMC) and eight M16 MGMCs. These were very occasionally used in their intended role of air defense in the first weeks of the war against the North Korean People’s Army Yak-9 and IL-10 attack aircraft. However, once the latter had been destroyed by the autumn of 1950, the half-tracks were sent forward to provide direct infantry fire support with their deadly quad M45D 0.50-cal. machine guns. The M16 MGMC’s high rate of fire made it an ideal antipersonnel weapon against massed Communist infantry attacks.
Corgi Military Vehicles (http://www.flyingmule.com/range/diecast-model/armor/corgi-military-vehicles)

The Corgi "Military Vehicles" range presents highly-detailed, ready-made diecast models of military vehicles. Corgi diecast tanks require no glueing or painting. Each model is an instant display piece or diorama centerpiece straight from the box. Made from diecast metal, die cast tanks from Corgi are 100% true to scale... these don't look like model tanks, they look like tanks!. Color, camouflage and unit markings are carefully researched for maximum authenticity, marking the difference between and authentic scale model tank and a "toy" tank.

Corgi "Military Vehicles" diecast vehicles feature:

Diecast metal construction with some plastic components.
Rotating turret, elevating cannon and accurate hull in diecast metal.
Accurate moving tracks on detailed rotating wheels.
Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details.
Pad printed markings and placards that won't fade or peel like decals.See if you can fly past it's quad 50's here:

This week we have too many good deals on aircraft than can be covered. But we'll feature three to give just a taste of what's out there at the moment.

The first is an excellent deal on a 1:48 scale Carousel 1 Bf 109E. Straight from North Africa and the Mule, it is priced at only $49.99.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E Diecast Model
Luftwaffe 8./JG 27, "Black 8", Werner Schroer, Libya, August 1941
Limited Edition

1:48 Scale Length WidthMesserschmitt Bf 109E 7.5" 8.25"

Werner Schroer was one of the few German aces to achieve more than 100 victories against the Western Allies, yet he is probably best known as the pilot of "Black 8" in a much-published German color publicity photo. Schroer joined Jagdgeschwader 27 in August 1940 and flew with them in the Battle of Britain. While in France, JG 27 acquired their famous "Leopard over Africa" emblem, which reflected a determination to re-take the former colonial territories Germany lost in the First World War. When Hitler decided to send General Rommel and the Afrika Corps join Italy’s North African campaign against British Egypt, JG 27 was the fighter unit selected to support them. They landed at the Ainel-Gazla airfield in Libya on 18 April 1941. The next day JG 27 shot down four British Hurricanes, one of which was Lieutenant Schroer’s first kill. In the next few days Schroer added three more victories. In late April several JG 27 109s, including Schroer’s, were cleaned and photographed for home front consumption. White wall tires shown on several 109s were not a decoration, but an attempt to protect rubber tires from desert heat. On 30 August 1941. Schroer and his wingman attacked RAF Tomahawks over Tobruk, setting one on fire and claiming a victory. Unfortunately for the Axis powers, Schroer’s victim, Australian Clive Caldwell, although wounded and nursing a crippled aircraft, did not crash. Caldwell not only limped back to base, he shot down a 109 on the way, and ultimately was credited with 20 victories in the North African fighting. Schroer had scored 11 when he was appointed Staffelkapitane of 8./JG 27 in June 1942, then tallied another 11 victories in two weeks. Schroer’s 61 victories in North Africa with JG 27 made him the second leading ace of the Mediterranean Theater, after Hans Joachim Marseilles. After rising to command II./JG 27 in April 1943, Schroer was sent to lead III./JG 54 in March 1944. In July 1944 he was taken out of a combat role to lead the Unit Commander’s School. Schroer was named Kommodore of JG 3 ‘Udet’ in February 1945. His final score of 114 included 102 RAF and USAAF opponents (including 26 American four-engine bombers) and 12 Russians in only 197 missions. Werner Schroer died in 1985.

Please note: This model comes with a Swastika decal that can optionally be applied to the tail for added authenticity. Limited Edition of 1200 pieces worldwide.

Limited Edition

1:72 Scale Length Width North American P-51B Mustang 5.25" 6.25"

One of the most valued modifications applied to USAAF Mustangs was to replace the standard flush canopy with the RAF ‘Malcolm’ hood. This afforded an already potent fighting machine even greater combat visibility. During the melee of a dogfight, this small advantage could be the difference between coming home, or not! ‘BERLIN EXPRESS’ carries the distinctive D-Day identification markings, applied specifically to reduce the possibility of friendly fire casualties. The P-51 Mustang has to be one of the most beautiful aircraft ever produced. It was developed following a British request for a new fighter in 1940, made to the newly formed North American Aviation Company. Initial engine problems plagued the design, but the combination of the Mustang and a Rolls Royce Merlin Engine proved a revelation. The aircraft was transformed into the world’s most potent fighting machine, possessing speed, endurance and firepower. The USAAF now had the ability to escort its bombers deep into Germany and the Mustang ensured the Allies gained air superiority. It also accounted for more enemy aircraft ‘kills’ in Europe than any other type, as overwhelming numbers systematically destroyed the Luftwaffe’s ability to fight!

P-51B Mustang Diecast Model
RAF No.133 (Polish) Wing, Stanislaw Skalski
Limited Edition

1:72 Scale Length Width North American P-51B Mustang 5.25" 6.25"

The RAF referred to its P-51’s as Mustang III’s and made an immediate modification. Combat visibility was considered too poor for European operations, out of the standard ‘hinged’ canopy, so RAF machines were fitted with a ‘bulged’ sliding canopy, known as the ‘Malcolm Hood’. The resultant variant was considered the best fighting machine of the P-51 series, although later models carried more armament. RAF Mustangs were used extensively against the V-1 Flying Bomb threat to Southern England, in the latter stages of the War. Designed to meet an urgent British requirement for fighters for the Royal Air Force, the P51 was first flown on October 26th, 1940.

Our last Super Bowl week selection is the beautiful and deadly Bf 109F. This one was flown by Hermann Graf on the Eastern Front in early 1942.

Hermann Graf was one of the most gifted fighter pilots of WWII – he was also one of the most controversial! As with most Luftwaffe pilots, Graf gained his first flying experiences on the hillsides of Germany, piloting various gliders. Following his formal training, he was eventually posted to Russia, in support of Operation Barbarossa. Here he would begin to display his abilities in aerial combat and quickly rose to prominence as he decimated his Russian opponents. During a three week period in early 1942, Graf shot down 48 enemy aircraft and in the following September, a further 64 aircraft fell to his guns. Graf ended the war with 212 aerial victories, having flown more than 830 sorties. He was one of the most decorated Luftwaffe pilots of the Second World War. When thinking of the Luftwaffe in WWII, it is the Messerschmitt Bf 109 that immediately springs to mind. This was the most widely used of all the German fighters and was produced in huge numbers, initially serving during the Spanish Civil War. The Bf 109F (Friedrich) was the most handsome variant of this famous fighter, whilst remaining a lethal fighting machine. It displayed much sleeker lines than the more angular “Emil” and enjoyed huge success in the deserts of North Africa and the Russian Steppe. Flown by many of the world’s highest scoring Air “Aces’, the Me 109F concentrated its awesome firepower through the nose of the aircraft. This feature allowed many novice pilots to gain aerial victories and valuable combat experience, early in their careers.

The Monkey Depot hosts our first selection this week. In the 1:32 scale from 21st Century and offered for $19.95. It is:

21st Century Toys 1/32 German Sd.Kfz. 139 Marder III Green + Black Camo US0116
In Stock List Price Your Price Qty Y $24.99 $19.95

Detailed Description
Scale: 1/32
Materials: Plastic Description: The German Marders were a series of self-propelled tank destroyers mostly built as stop gap solutions until purpose designed and built equipment could reach the field. The Marder III was the first production version in the Marder III series. The gun was centrally located, due to weight issues. With the engine mounted at the rear of its chassis, the gun had to be mounted elsewhere in order to keep the tank from being unbalanced. The later Marder IIIM version had the engine relocated to the center of the chassis, hence the designation “M” (middle), and the gun compartment was located on the back of the hull. Both versions had lightly armored crew compartments and were open in the top and rear. The Soviet 76.2 mm field gun was captured in large quantities and it was decided to use these by mating them to the Panzer 38(t) chassis. The resulting Marder III was an effective anti-tank weapon and was used widely by the Germans in WWII. Shown here is the paint master of the S1 scheme for the forthcoming Marder III in 1/32nd scale.

The Russian KV-2 was famous for its enormous size and the gigantic 152mm gun. Along with deploying these monsters in small numbers the KV-2 was a victim of its own design. Tremendously heavy and prone to mechanical failures these tanks were doomed from the start. ‘One Tank Division’ lost 22 of their 33 KV-2s with only five being attributed to the enemy the remaining 17 were abandoned because of a lack of fuel or ammunition. Only 334 KV-2's were produced when they were canceled in October 1941. Crews referred to the KV-2 with its large turret, 152 mm gun and massive weight as the Dreadnought. With “For Stalin” inscribed on the high profile turret this KV-2 like all others stood out and became an easy target. Despite the increased weight the same hull and chassis as the KV-1 were used. Before the use of Flak 18s and 36s there are records showing a KV-2 withstood over forty hits and none penetrated the armor. Size and lack of re-supply were the main downfalls of this giant.

1:48 scale premium diecast aircraft by Carousel. What a striking Bf-109E!

Franz von Werra was "The One Who Got Away," the subject of a best-seller and two movies. He was a German ace whose escape exploits were far more exciting than his brief career as a fighter pilot. On 5 September 1940, Spitfires shot down von Werra's 109 over Kent as he escorted bombers attacking the Royal Air Force at Biggin Hill. He crash-landed and was quickly captured. In late September von Werra was sent to a POW camp at Grizedale Hall in Lancashire and began planning an escape. On 7 October he slipped away from an exercise party without being noticed by the guards. Von Werra eluded pursuit for six cold, rainy days on the barren hills of the Lake District. Recaptured in Cumberland, he was sent to another POW camp at Swanwick in Derbyshire. Immediately he began a tunnel with several other prisoners. On the night of 17 December five Germans escaped through the tunnel. Four were soon captured. Von Werra posed as a Dutchman flying with the RAF and attempted to steal a British fighter. He bluffed his way past Scotland Yard investigators and onto Hucknall Aerodrome on 21 December. More bluff got him into the cockpit of a new Hurricane II fighter with a mechanic to start his engine. Moments before take off, an RAF officer apprehended him at gunpoint. Von Werra and other German POW's were sent via ship to Canada. In late January, von Werra jumped from a moving POW train southwest of Montreal and headed south for the St. Lawrence River, the border between Canada and neutral United States. He managed to cross the frozen river near Ogdensburg, NY and turned himself in to the first policeman he found. American reporters were charmed by "Baron" von Werra's bravado and fluent English, and his escape made headlines across the USA and Germany. Canada attempted to extradite him, but the German Consul in NY assisted von Werra to return to Germany via Mexico, Brazil and Italy. Hitler awarded him the Knight's Cross. He joined the invasion of Russia in July and ran his score to 21 victories. Posted to the Dutch coast, on 25 October 1941 his luck and his 109's engine failed. Franz von Werra fell into the North Sea.

The remaining three selections this week will be from a very good sale at Spirit of '76. To complete our armor selections, we have a 1:32 scale Forces of Valor Grant tank from North Africa and for only $18.99.

UK M3 Grant (El Alamein) - The M3 Grant was a United States tank design that was modified for the British Army. The British Government had sought a complete British design, but had to accept a modified U.S. designed Tank. The British Army did not like the high profile of the standard U.S. turret, so they offered a lower profile turret with more crew space that would fit within the same turret ring.

Plastic Components

Authentic Paint Scheme
Display Stand Included
Interchangeable Landing Gear (Up or Down)

Wingspan: 9.75"

About the A-10 Thunderbolt II:
The A-10 has superior maneuverability at low speeds and altitude, thanks to straight, wide wings with downturned "droop" wing tips. These also allow short takeoffs and landings, permitting operations from rugged, forward airfields near front lines. The plane can loiter for extended periods of time and operate under 1,000 feet (300 m) ceilings with 1.5-mile (2.4 km) visibility. It typically flies at a relatively slow speed of 180 knots (200 mph or 320 km/h), which makes it a much better candidate for the ground-attack role than fast fighter-bombers, which often have difficulty targeting small and slow-moving targets.

On day 3 of the air war a US Navy F-14 was downed 80 miles from Baghdad. An A-10A called “Playtime” piloted by Captain Paul Johnson stayed on station for 10 hours providing SAR coordination as well as close air support. Because of his action Capt. Johnson earned the Air Force Cross and many missions later the aircraft 78-0681 was retired to the US AF Museum at Wright–Patterson AFB, Ohio where it can be seen.

We start out this week with an old friend in an unusual 1:56 scale. From Wartoyz and Hobby Master offered for $17.99, it is an early production Tiger 1.

http://www.wartoyz.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/hg0102-tiger-1-300.jpg

In pursuit of greater firepower, the German Army created a series of heavy battle tanks. One of the most formidable was the Tiger Tank. With 100mm thick armor plating and an awesome 88mm gun, the Tiger was vastly superior to the Allied tanks it faced.

This highly detailed 1:56 scale die-cast version of the Early Production version of the Tiger 1 (Sd. Kfz. 181) depicts Tank No. 8, sPzKp Meyer 'Strotch'.

This German Tiger 1 Sd. Kfz. 181 is part of Hobby Master's Ground Power series. The 1:56 scale die cast metal vehicle is approximately 4.5 inches long (6 inches long with gun barrel), and has a turret that rotates and a gun barrel that raises and lowers.

This new 1/35 scale fully built-up model features an initial Tiger I with vehicle number “122”. It is skillfully hand painted in a stunning winter camouflage pattern as a member of sPzAbt 502. The original vehicle was one of the first Tiger I's ever to see combat on the Eastern Front.

Some of the peculiar features of this vehicle are the stowage bin mounted on the turret rear, and handrails on the turret sides. The lengthy 8.8cm scale gun barrel can even recoil!

Main Features:

- Fully assembled
- Accurate winter camo and markings for a Tiger I serving with s.Pz.Abt.502
- Historically accurate
- Hatches can be opened and closed
- Front machine gun can rotate and point in different directions
- Barrel can recoil, just like the real thing
- Includes a display base

About the Tiger I:
The Tiger I was in use from late 1942 until the German surrender in 1945. It was given its nickname by Ferdinand Porsche. The design served as the basis for other armoured vehicles, including the Tiger II, or 'King Tiger' tank, and the Sturmtiger self-propelled gun.

The Tiger differed from earlier German tanks principally in its size; although the general design and layout were broadly similar to the previous heavy tank, the Panzer IV, the Tiger weighed more than twice as much. This was due to its substantially thicker armor, the larger main gun, and the consequently greater volume of fuel and ammunition storage, larger engine, and more solidly-built transmission and suspension. The Tiger I had front armor up to 100 mm thick, as opposed to the 80 mm front armor of contemporary models of the Panzer IV, with 80 mm on the sides and back. The armor, especially in the front, was very effective at stopping anti-tank rounds of most of the WWII tank guns at common engagement distances. At closer ranges and on the sides, the tank was more vulnerable. Its roof armor was 25 mm or 40 mm, similar to most medium tanks of the day.

I guess there is in fact one more sign of winter and it is at the bottom of this page:

Features:
True to 1/35 scale
Accurate two-tone camouflage scheme with weathering
Accurate tracks with appropriate level of sag
Includes a display base

Dragon Armor is proud to announce a magnificent 1/35 scale rendition of a Tiger I from 1./s.Pz.Abt. 505 fighting in Nowe Koszary in 1944. It is a Late Production variant, with such associated features as steel road wheels, updated commander’s cupola, and single headlight centrally located in the center of the hull front. The heavy tank unit s.Pz.Abt. 505 was formed in January 1943. It was involved in the titanic tank battle at Kursk and returned to the Eastern Front after being refitted in July 1944. It saw combat in East Prussia in a vain attempt to stem the implacable tide of the Red Army.

This model tank is the result of painstaking craftsmanship, with even minute details carefully recreated. This is the advantage of the larger 1/35 scale, where even the tiniest of items can be shown in glorious detail. The model is topped off with a stunning two-tone paint scheme of green stripes over a yellow base coat. This Tiger I bears the famous “charging knight on horseback” insignia of s.Pz.Abt 505, this insignia being delicately rendered using the pad-painting process. A touch of color is also provided by a band of yellow on the base of the gun tube and the vehicle tactical number “334”. The model is expertly finished off with a tasteful level of dry-brushing and weathering, even down to its individual track links.

We have three selections from our airfield this week. The first is from Trinkets to Treasures and is a Corgi 1:72 scale Corgi Vickers Wellington MkVIII RAF Coastal Command [AA34805] for just $45.99.

http://www.trinketstotreasures.com/images/AA34805.jpg

http://www.trinketstotreasures.com/images/images_extra/AA34805a.jpg

In April 1942 the Wellington GR Mk.VIII entered service with No.172 squadron of Coastal Command. The GR.VIII was a modified Mk.IC bomber, with ASV Mk.II radar installed and in some cases also a Leigh Light. On 3/4th June 1942 the first attack on a surfaced submarine at night using a Leigh Light was carried out by a Vickers Wellington of No.172 Squadron, RAF Coastal Command, flown by Squadron Leader J.H. Greswell. The target was the Italian Navy Marconi Class submarine Luigi Torelli. When illuminated, the submarine initially remained on the surface and fired recognition flares, believing the aircraft to be friendly. The Wellington then dropped four Mk8 depth charges, damaging the submarine. From the Aviation Archive collection #AA34805. It's the Vickers Wellington MkVIII - HX379:WN-A, No.172 Squadron, Coastal Command. An amazing amount of detail on this scale model. Complete with display stand. The "Century Wings" range presents highly-detailed, ready-made diecast models of military aircraft. Beginning with the ever popular F-14 Tomcat, Century Wings are setting a new standard in 1:72 diecast for detail and accuracy. Each model includes a selection of weapons and removable pilot figures. Most notable however, are the completed landing gear sub-assemblies that snap quickly into place, eliminating the frustration of attaching numerous individual gear doors and struts found on similar diecast models.

This beautiful rendition of the famous F-14 Tomcat can be configured for ground or "in-flight" display. Furthermore, the wings can be positioned in varying levels of sweep position.

About This Tank
Officially named the Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf. B, the King Tiger was a formidable German tank weighing 69.8 tons. Entering production in mid-1944, it was armed with an 8.8cm KwK 43 L/71 gun and its frontal armor was up to 180mm thick. With such assets, this tank could easily prey on its less well-armed Allied opponents. However, its bulk and underpowered engine meant it wasn’t as effective in offense. Dragon Armor has launched a fantastic new fully built-up 1/35 scale model of a Tiger II. This is the very first Henschel production version of the King Tiger to feature in the larger-scale Dragon Armor range. The actual vehicle it is based on was a tank of sPzAbt 506 that fought in the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes in December 1944. Interestingly, this was the only Heer Tiger battalion to participate in the winter offensive.

Commonly regarded as the torpedo bomber H6 version of the HE 111, the H-6 saw use on all fronts including the campaign in North Africa. The aircraft depicted here is in the Mediterranean camouflage from KG 26. KG 26 was the main anti-shipping torpedo geschwader of the Luftwaffe in the Second World War. KG 26 reached the height of their effectiveness attacking convoys over the Baltic as they sailed from the UK to Murmansk in Russia. They developed a tactic they called the `golden comb'. This involved the torpedo-carrying HE 111s attacking all at once in line abreast formation at low altitude at dusk when visibility was at its poorest.

It's Memorial Day weekend. Our thoughts and prayers turn to those who sacrificed so much for the rest of us, paying the cost to achieve and maintain our freedom and nation. In that spirit we feature our military die cast picks for this week.

Our first selection is a U.S. World War II tank. From Corgi's 1:50 scale History Channel line and brought to you by Aikens for $24.95, it is a U.S. ARMY "761ST TANK BATTALION" M4A3 SHERMAN TANK.

Here it is:

Our next selection is from the other side in World War II. It is also a 1:50 Corgi, but this one is from the Skirmish line, brought to you by Diecast Direct for $29.37. It is SdKfz7/1 & Anti-Aircraft Gun & 3 German Infantry Figures - German Army, Holland 1944 (CC60011).

http://www.corgi.co.uk/public/pictures/large/CC60011.jpg

By November 1944 the German 15th Army withdrew deeper into Holland. The German 7th army began a series of attacks against the US 9th Army. The Germans had been preparing a massive counterattack in the West since the Allied breakout from Normandy. The plan called Wacht am Rhein (“Watch on the Rhine”) was to attack through the Ardennes and swing North. The attack started on December 16 in what became known as the Battle of the Bulge. After initial successes in bad weather, which gave them cover from the Allied air forces, the Germans were eventually pushed back to their starting points by January 15, 1945.

Your path to that history is here:

Franklin Mint Armour Collection B11B649
M4 Sherman Tank Diecast Model
US Army

1:24 Scale M4 Sherman Tank
Length Width
9.5" 4.5"

This is a precision-engineered scale model from The Franklin Mint, carefully crafted, hand-painted and hand-finished, featuring a level of detail far and above that of the Franklin Mint's regular Armour Collection series. This model features many operating parts including a rotating removable turret, elevating cannon, moving tracks on rotating wheels with working suspension, opening hatches and more.
What the ship is to the Navy and what the airplane is to the Air Force-that's what the tank is to the Army. And the U.S. Army's greatest tank commander was George S. Patton Jr. Born in California on November 11, 1885, Patton attended Virginia Military Academy, graduated from West Point, and participated in the 1912 Olympic Games as a pentathlete.
During World War I, Patton served as aide to Gen. John J. Pershing and organized and trained the first tank brigade. With the outbreak of WWII, Patton returned to the battlefield and distinguished himself in a variety of campaigns-the invasion of North Africa where he faced Gen. Rommel's tank forces, and the invasion of Sicily, where he led the Seventh Army. Later, under his spirited command, the Third Army pushed through France and Germany, and into Czechoslovakia. Patton's flamboyant style and impetuous manner made him a hero to his troops, but led to a series of official reprimands and reassignments. In December of 1945, less than a year after defeating the Nazis, Patton was injured in a car accident and died in a Heidelberg hospital. A genius in tank warfare, Patton thwarted the German counter offensive at the Battle of the Bulge, leading the way in his M4-A3 Sherman tank. The Sherman tank was the standard tank produced in the U.S. from 1942 through 1944. More than 50,000 were delivered during the height of production, and the M4-A3 was the the most important of all WW II combat tanks. This formidable vehicle was armed with a 76mm gun which had superior penetrating power and could pierce 4 inches of armor at 1,000 yards. General Patton and the redoubtable Sherman tank share a moment in military history that will not be forgotten.

Our second tank is a Dragon 1:72 Armor 60307, M4 Sherman Tank Diecast Model, British Army Coldstream Guards, Germany, 1945, Mk.V Tulip available for $12.99.

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/DM-60307_01_lrg.gif

The Sherman M4A4 was produced by Detroit Arsenal and all vehicles had a three-piece bolted nose. It was powered by a Chrysler WC Multibank engine, which required the lengthening of the rear hull to accommodate it. Many M4A4 Shermans were delivered to the British, where it was referred to as the Sherman Mk.V. Dragon Armor proudly offers a Sherman Mk.V of the famous Coldstream Guards of the British Army. This is no ordinary Mk.V, for it possesses some fascinating appendages on the turret! The model is armed with twin launchers for 60lb aircraft rockets. This type of Sherman V was modified in the field by the Coldstream Guards Armoured Division in late 1944. The rockets were taken from Typhoon fighters, and rocket-equipped Shermans were used in combat during the Rhine crossings. They achieved success against targets like roadblocks and enemy personnel sheltering in buildings and woods, plus they also gave a huge morale boost to British troops! The rocket and launcher details on this new Dragon Armor model are subtle and accurate, as are all the details of this 1/72 scale Sherman Mk.V model of a vehicle of the 1st Armoured Battalion of this famous division fighting in Germany in 1945. The paint finish on this replica is exemplary, as it accurately captures the British bronze green color used at this period of the war.

http://www.jjshobby.com/Shoppingcart/images/DRW50104.jpg

1/72 F-15C Eagle 71st TFS, 1st TFW

The 71st Fighter Squadron is one of three fighter squadrons assigned to the 1st Fighter Wing. Its mission is to maintain a combat-ready force able to conduct air-superiority operations anywhere in the world for the United States and its allies.

In 1975, the 71st moved to its current home with the 1st Fighter Wing at Langley Air Force Base, Va., where it was equipped with the F-15 Eagle air superiority fighter in 1976.

The 71st garnered numerous awards in its distinguished career. The 71st Fighter Squadron won the prestigious Hughes Achievement Trophy in 1999, 1993 and 1969, awarded annually to the most outstanding air superiority unit in the Air Force. The 71st received the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and the Presidential Unit Citation on four occasions each. McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Corporation recognized the 71st in July 1991, for achieving 110,000 flying hours without a serious mishap.

The 71st TFS deployed in support of Operation Desert Shield as part of the first U.S. Air Force contingent in Saudi Arabia. The squadron was integral in establishing allied air-superiority during the operation. More recently the squadron participated in Operation Southern Watch in the Persian Gulf Region. The unit was redesignated the 71st Fighter Squadron Sept. 1, 1991.

In a normal flying day, the 71st Fighter Squadron will launch approximately 25 sorties to fly training missions in air-to-air combat, aerial gunnery, and air defense intercepts.

Heading to the skies, our first flying selection is not cheap. However to many collectors the Corgi 1:72 scale B-17F Memphis Belle is almost the Holy Grail of four engine collectors. J-Bar Hobbies say they still have them and will sell you one for $150.00. As they only have a not-so-great picture of the product box on their site, I'll feature one of Tim's pictures from his great Corgi site:

Patrolling the streets in Iraq is no easy task, and this duty is fraught with danger, so much so that Humvees used by U.S. troops for patrols are now exclusively up-armored variants. The M1114 HMMWV is widely used in this role, as its armor panels offer greater protection against the deadly IEDs, RPGs and bullets that might suddenly strike at any time of day.

A Constant Game of Chess
The Cold War battle for air supremacy was a constant chess game between the USA and the USSR. For every F-series fighter the US developed, Russia answered with a MIG. The MIG 29 Fulcrum was the last Cold War fighter that Russia made for herself and her allies. This bisonic (1518 mph top speed) fighter was difficult to develop, going through 19 prototypes. Although it has proved capable in practice sorties against F-16s, its combat record, starting in the Gulf War, is 0-12. This specific Fulcrum was flown with these special colors only once as the last official flight of the Eat German Air Force. Many Fulcrums were adapted as part of the modern day Luftwaffe.

Here in Austin it's time to temporarily interrupt the celebration of the Longhorns victory over former #1 OU. It was a great game. While I'm tempted to feature only Texas related products, such as the GMP Texas Longhorn P-40, I will spare you all of that.

Our first armor selection is from On Mark International, which is located in Oklahoma--but I'm sure that they are all OSU fans celebrating their own tough fought upset victory tonight. They offer the 1:50 scale Corgi CC51006 - M4 A3 Sherman Tank U.S. Army - 2nd Armoured Division - Sicily, 1943 Limited Edition for just $19.80.

1:72 Scale Length 9" Width 12.25" Heinkel He 111

In 1944, Germany had developed the V-1 flying bomb. The Vergetungswaffe 1 Fi 103/FZG-76 (V-1), known as the Flying Bomb, Buzz Bomb or Doodlebug was the first modern guided missile used in wartime and the first cruise missile. Called the Buszz Bomb because of the characteristic sound of the engine, it caused considerable fear in targeted areas. People would listen to the missile approaching but then be relieved when it could be heard overhead as that meant it had actually passed them. If the ending noise cut out, it was time to take cover as the unpowered missile would go into its terminal dive and explode. The early versions were launched from aircraft and not rocket launchers as they were later in the war.

The Gloster Gladiator was the last British biplane fighter, a development of the Gauntlet with an enclosed single seat cockpit, cantilever landing gear and with increased armament, and a 2 blade fixed pitch propeller. First flown in 1935, the Gladiator went into service with the RAF in 1936. The Mark I had an 840 hp Bristol Mercury IX air-cooled engine and the Mark II a Bristol Mercury VIIIA engine. The Sea Gladiator was the variant adopted by the fleet Air Arm. It was fitted with a deck arrestor, catapult points, and carried a collapsible dinghy. Numbers built totaled a minimum of 756 (480 RAF, 60 RN; 216 exported into 13 countries). Gladiators were also sold to Belgium, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Norway, China, Ireland, Greece, Portugal, Egypt, Iraq, and South Africa. 804 Naval Air Squadron was formed in November 1939 from 769 squadron Sea Gladiators which had been detached to Hatston to counter enemy attacks on Scapa, the squadron subsequently embarked on HMS Glorious in April 1940 to provide fighter patrols during ferrying operations of 269 squadron RAF Gladiators to Norway, and then transferred to HMS Furious at Cambeltown in early May 1940. May until September 1940 was spent by 804 squadron at Hatston, operating in defense of Scapa Flow, and subsequently recognized as only one of two FAA squadrons operating with RAF Fighter Command in the Battle of Britain.

USAAF 15th FG, 47th FS, "The Turnip Termites", w/Airbase Hard-stand Diorama, Length 6" Width 6.75".

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/DM-50304_01_lrg.gif

A P-47D is the subject of a new Dragon Warbirds release. The finely crafted miniature from Warbirds is a P-47D Razorback version, so-called for the sharp ridge on the upper fuselage behind the pilot’s canopy. The model depicts a P-47D of the 47th Fighter Squadron, which was activated on December 1, 1940 and was initially based in Hawaii. The model bears the colorful logo of “the Turnip Termites” squadron, and the plane is finished in a predominantly silver color. The squadron was credited with shooting down eight Japanese aircraft during the infamous Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, while it also went on to serve in other theaters of combat. Interestingly, the 47th Tactical Fighter Squadron is still in existence today flying the A-10 Warthog. This is a spectacular model, and it is enhanced by an authentic-looking scenic base that comes with the scale aircraft model. The diorama shows a section of airfield that is beautifully textured and painted in a most realistic fashion.

The Dragon Models "Dragon Wings 1:72 Warbirds Series" presents highly-detailed, ready-made diecast models of military aircraft.

Special Features: - Open window display packaging - Highly popular and collectible item - True to 1/72 scale - Fully accurate mold - Fully assembled - Historically accurate markings and insignia - Includes protective display case

The Sherman was widely used by British troops in WWII, with its first combat debut being in the North African campaign. While the most common variant was the Sherman V (M4A4 in American nomenclature), the second most common was the diesel-engine Sherman III (M4A2). Dragon Armor has released another fine miniature of a Sherman III serving with A Squadron of the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry. The tank is finished in a typical Mediterranean scheme of light mud and black paint. This particular scheme was officially introduced to all Middle East Command units in April 1943.

Here's this UK livery of the famous U.S. tank:

We hope that everyone (in the U.S. at least) had a happy Thanksgiving and, unlike the BCS, did not take on more than they could chew.

In the Thanksgiving dinner tradition, we'll start of big this week with the 1:16 scale Unimax Forces of Valor 85007, M4 Sherman Tank Diecast Model--US Army, Normandy, France, D-Day June 6th 1944. The Flying Mule has it for $324.99 and with free shipping.

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/UM-85007_02_lrg.gif

Length: 14.25" Width: 6.75"

The U.S. M4 Sherman was the most produced battle tank in WWII. Many variants were designed and manufactured to increase their effectiveness against German Panzer divisions. The M4A1 was quick, highly maneuverable, simple to maintain and was equipped with a 76 MM gun. This large-scale model of the Sherman is bristling with features that make it highly collectible. The model itself is a real heavy-weight and includes details impossible to achieve in a smaller scale. The model also includes detailed figures of crew members. Arrives in an large, attractive package complete with history book and limited edition certificate.

The Unimax "Forces of Valor" range presents affordable, ready-made diecast models of military vehicles.

Unimax "Forces of Valor" diecast vehicles feature:

Diecast metal construction with some plastic components.
Rotating turret, elevating cannon and accurate hull.
Painted, fitted, non-moving tracks on detailed non-rotating wheels.
Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details.
Pad printed markings and placards that won't fade or peel like decals. After you've found a place to hide it from the wife/girlfriend, click here:

Our final ground pounder selection this week is something different. From the Flying Mule for $13.99, it is a Dragon 1:72 Armor 60349 AAV7 AmTrack Diecast Model USMC, MICLIC (Mine Clearance Line Charge).

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/DM-60349_01_lrg.gif

The AAV7A1 family of vehicles is the newest rendition of the LVTP7 that originally made its appearance in 1971. Developed by FMC Corporation (now United Defense, LP), this 17-ton amphibious vehicle can achieve speeds of up to 64km/h on roads and 13.5km/h in water. It is the mainstay of the U.S. Marine amphibious vehicle fleet today, as well as being used by marine forces from a number of other nations. These “tuna boats” have most recently been proving themselves in the dusty heat of Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF).
Dragon Armor has previously released a 1/72 AAVP7A1, but the newest member in the family offers something extra. The new collectors’ item includes an accurately depicted MK-154 MICLIC (Mine Clearance Line Charge) system mounted atop the AAV. Firing up to three rocket-projected explosive line charges into a minefield, the MK-154 system can produce a safe lane up to 16m wide and 100m long. This self-contained electric and hydraulic mine-clearing equipment is ideal for beach assaults, and was deployed in OIF during the initial invasion. This particular model lacks nothing! It is finished in a three-color NATO camouflage scheme. All the relevant detail of the real AAV7A1 is glorious portrayed. This unique model represents an unusual vehicle in the USMC inventory, one that is sure to please fans of modern armored equipment.
