View Full Version : 2011 Die Cast Buys of the Week

KG_Jag
01-03-2011, 12:00 AM
We will start our sixth year of featuring certain die cast items each week. During 2010 we posted 252 selections, including a few items which appeared more than once (generally from a different vendor) over the year. Those selections came from over 75 different vendors. Our mission is to provide an independent voice--highlighting some of the best values each week to the military die cast collector.

It is probably true that such an effort can never be completely objective. What we like, may not be exactly what you like, in terms of model type, scale, quality, manufacturer or other factors. That said; we try to include selections for both the most serious and budget minded collectors. We have certain dealers who have established outstanding reputations for product, prices and customer service. So these vendors probably receive more views than some others in the process of making our selections each week. There is also at least one vendor who we have never featured, due to poor customer service and relations experienced with him. Other dealers are outstanding in most respects--and may even have the very best customer service, but tend to have higher prices and few, if any, reduced price sales. As a result, their products tend to be recommended less than those with good products and outstanding prices, even if their customer service is of a lower quality.

It has not escaped notice that we have lost a number of vendors in the last 2 1/2 years or so. Further many vendors appear to reducing stock or even eliminating their military items that we feature here. In this adverse economic environment we are proud to say that we featured significantly more vendors in 2010 than we did in 2009. It's unclear whether we can exceed or even match those accomplishments in another year of this bad economy, but we will try.

We use the term "die cast" somewhat liberally, as we feature not only traditional die cast items, but also resin, wood and mostly plastic items as well. The keys are that each featured item come pre-painted and requires either little or no assembly.

The selections for 2011 begin with...a pair of 1:32 scale Forces of Valor World War II heavy weight foes. Entering the ring fist, weighing $41.99 and fighting for The Flying Mule's Winter Inventory Reduction Sale--it's the Henschel Sd.Kfz.182 King Tiger from the German Army, Normandy, France, D-Day, June 6th 1944.

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/UM-80601_01_lrg.jpg Length: 9" Width: 4.5"

The most powerful tank of WW2, the King Tiger featured an 88mm gun and near impenetrable front armor. More than a match for its allied counterparts, this tank was one of the most feared weapons of the war. Even today, it stands as a hallmark of German armored engineering.

Officially designated Panzerkampfwagen VI Sd.Kfz 182, the King Tiger entered service in 1944. This tank carried the awesome tank-killing 88mm main gun and had four-inch armor at its thickest. The system was crewed by five personnel and two machine guns were added for self-defense. The King Tiger's ability to destroy enemy tanks at extreme ranges yet remain impervious to those same tanks made it more than a match for any Allied tank. The sight of a King Tiger on the battlefield was terrifying and did great morale damage to Allied forces.

Forces of Valor's 1:32 scale King Tiger series recreates the most powerful and heavily armored tank of WWII. The top portion of the hull is made of diecast metal and features opening driver and forward gunner's hatches. A functional engine hatch at the rear reveals the top portions of the V-12 Maybach engine. The 360 degree rotating turret has an opening commander's copula hatch and elevating diecast metal cannon with a detailed muzzle brake. Wide rolling rubber tracks and wheels with working suspension are featured on each track wheel. Separately applied battlefield equipment such as hatchets and cables are included for a variety of display options.

The Unimax "Forces of Valor" range presents affordable, ready-made diecast models of military vehicles.

Unimax "Forces of Valor" diecast vehicles feature:

Diecast metal construction with some plastic components.
Rotating turret, elevating cannon and accurate hull.
Painted, fitted, non-moving tracks on detailed non-rotating wheels.
Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details.
Pad printed markings and placards that won't fade or peel like decals.

In the other corner, representing the U.S. of A. and Wartoyz, it's the M26 Pershing Tank, weighing in at $42.99 and wearing the greenish trunks.

http://www.wartoyz.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/80016-m25-pershing-460.jpg

In the latter part of WWII, the U.S. Army realized the inherent weaknesses of the M4 Shermans. In the face of the heavy battle tanks of the German Army, the U.S. began development of the M26. The Pershing would have much greater armor, a lower profile, and a 90MM or 105MM main gun. Produced in the later years of WWII, it first entered combat in 1944.

The Pershing had many improvements over previous designs. New suspension systems utilizing a Horizontal Volute Suspension System (HVSS) and a torsion bar system made the M26 a smoother riding and better handing heavy tank. The powerplant was a strong 500 horsepower V-8 engine with a new Torquematic fluid-drive automatic transmission, thus providing the Pershing enhanced battle performance maneuverability.

This 1:32 scale version of the Pershing depicts the tank as seen in Germany in 1945.

This U.S. M26 Pershing tank is part of Forces Of Valor's Enthusiast Edition series, which is the extremely detailed version of this vehicle.. The 1:32 scale die cast metal vehicle is approximately 8 inches long (11 inches long with gun barrel) and has a turret that rotates, a gun barrel that raises and lowers, hatches that open and close, and a rolling tank suspension. It comes complete with a Tank Commander figure and accessories such as external gas cans and battle ready gear!

Our last armor selection this opening week is a 1:48 scale Tamiya Masterwork Panther Type G Late Ver. - Finished "Battle of Kustrin" from the Tamiya company store or Mark Twain Hobby Center for $39.99.

http://images.nitrosell.com/product_images/8/1911/header_26517%5B1%5D.jpg

This fully finished tank model has been painstakingly assembled by Tamiya craftsmen, with the high level of workmanship clearly on display. Realistic detailing includes fully articulated tank treads and distinctive hull shape. Includes slanted stripe 3-color camouflage that is not described in assembly kit painting instructions.

About the German Panther Ausf.G:

Developed as a countermeasure to the Soviet T-34, the German Panther tank was produced from 1943 until the end of the war and served alongside the Panzer III, IV and Tiger tanks. The Panther tank featured sloped armor, powerful 700hp Maybach engine and a turret placed far back on the hull mounting a 75mm L/70 cannon. The main gun was even more devastating than its size of 75mm would suggest, due to the large propellant charge and long barrel with high muzzle velocity.

About the Model

Fully assembled 1/48 Panther Ausf.G pre-painted with markings pre-applied.
Model depicts late version tank featuring mantlet with lower chin piece, muffler with flash suppressor and heater unit used for winter operations.
Die-cast chassis for extra weight and enhanced realism.
Finish has been made to look weathered for display quality accuracy.
High quality markings depict tank present at Battle of Kustrin in March 1945.
Paint scheme: dark green base coat with red brown & dark yellow camouflage.
Includes special display base with nameplate.

Our air fans have been more than patient. So will start them off with a choice between 1:72 scale Hobby Master Skyraiders. Option one is again from the Mule's Winter Sale. It is the Douglas A-1H Skyraider USN VA-25 Fist of the Fleet, NE577, Clint Johnson, USS Midway, Vietnam, June 20th 1965 for $39.99.

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/HM-HA2903_01_lrg.jpg

Length: 6.5" Width: 8.25"

This particular aircraft was flown by Clint Johnson on a MIG killing mission on June 20th, 1965. Four A-1s were jumped by two MIG-17s, who attempted to maneuver with the Skyraiders. One of the MIGs was downed after getting slow in front of the Skyraider's 20mm cannons and the kill was awarded jointly to two of the Skyraider pilots, Lt. Clint Johnson and Lt. Charles Hartman.

Designed by Douglas' chief engineer Ed Heinemann, the A1 was first flown on March 18th, 1945. Used in Vietnam for close air support and for providing cover for combat rescue missions, the Skyraider was valued for its ability to devastate enemy ground targets. It had four 20-mm guns installed in the wings, and could be equipped with additional combinations of bombs, mines, gun pods and rockets. The Skyraider was large for a single-engine, single-seat low monoplane—its bigger-than-average fuselage had plenty of space for modification and could be used for carrying passengers, medical provisions or heavy cargo.

Hobby Master's 1:72 scale A-1 Skyraider is made with state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques, which yield a near solid and seamlessly-constructed model with a heavy feel. The fuselage features a canopy that slides open to reveal flight controls and an instrument panel with pad-printed dials. Other fine details include a tail hook below an all-metal empennage, individual exhaust stacks emerging from the rear of the engine cowling and a variety of removable ordnance and external fuel tanks (depending on the release). The main landing gear and gear doors are constructed as a subassembly for easy installation. The leading edge features correctly-shaped machine gun barrels and hand-painted navigation lights.

The Hobby Master "1:72 Air Power Series" presents detailed, ready-made diecast models of military aircraft.

Hobby Master "1:72 Air Power Series" diecast airplanes feature:

Diecast metal construction with some plastic components.

Optional extended/retracted landing gear.
Presentation stand to display the aircraft "in flight".

The sale at Aim Higher Jets provides us with our last plane pick this week. It's the Century Wings 1:72 scale Lockheed Martin SR-71B USAF 9th SRW, Beale AFB, CA, 1968, and it runs $109.95

http://www.aimhigherjets.com/v/vspfiles/photos/CW-718845-2.jpg

17.75" in Length
9.25" Wingspan

Few aircraft are as instantly recognizable as the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird and Century Wings have reproduced the stunning lines of this aircraft perfectly in 1:72 scale. With Century Wings' usual degree of exceptional detail and accuracy, this model is absolute "must have" for any diecast aircraft collection. Nearly 18" in length and 9.25" in width, this model is sure to be the centerpiece of any collection. The Lockheed SR-71 was an advanced, long-range, Mach 3 strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed from the Lockheed A-12 and YF-12A aircraft by the Lockheed Skunk Works. The SR-71 was unofficially named the Blackbird, and called the Habu by its crews. Clarence "Kelly" Johnson was responsible for many of the design's innovative concepts. A defensive feature of the aircraft was its high speed and operating altitude, whereby, if a surface-to-air missile launch were detected, standard evasive action was simply to accelerate.

The SR-71 line was in service from 1964 to Few aircraft are as instantly recognizable as the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird and Century Wings have reproduced the stunning lines of this aircraft perfectly in 1:72 scale. With Century Wings' usual degree of exceptional detail and accuracy, this model is absolute "must have" for any diecast aircraft collection. This model is particularly unique as it represents the rare SR-71B trainer variant. A total of 32 SR-71s were produced, consisting of 29 SR-71As, 2 SR-71Bs and 1 SR-71C. The 'B' variant differed from the 'A' by having a raised rear cockpit for the Instructor pilot. The aerodynamic effects of the raised cockpit at the front of such a long neck required additional ventral fins under the aircraft to maintain yaw control. Aircraft #61-7956 was first flown on November 18th, 1965. The second SR-71B, #61-7957, was lost in a landing accident in 1968. #61-7956 remained the cornerstone of the intensive 10 month/100 hour SR-71 flight-training program until 1990. In 1991, the aircraft was transferred to NASA for research flights before finally being retired in 1997. It is now on static display at the Kalamazoo Aviation History Museum in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

This replica of the SR-71 is constructed almost entirely of metal; only the smallest amount of plastic has been used in the manufacturing process. Crisply detailed panel lines and ultra-thin metal rudders and edges surround the airframe to reproduce this eye-catching speed demon. The sharply pointed shock cones protruding from the engine nacelles and the afterburner detail at the rear of the engine are accurately reproduced, and the correctly detailed set of landing gear and doors have been included as robust sub-assemblies that allow for quick and easy configuration for ground or in-flight display.

Our first pick in flight rises from the deck of the 3000Toys sale pages. Also from Dragon, it is the 1:72 scale F/A-18E Super Hornet VFA-31 "Tomcatters" offered for $24.95.

http://www.3000toys.com/images/DRAGON/50136.jpg

High Quality Diecast Metal
- Historically Accurate
- Detailed Cockpits
- Pre-assembled

The “Tomcatters” is a U.S. Navy strike fighter squadron based at NAS Oceana. This squadron, VFA-31, flies the F/A-18E Super Hornet exclusively. Founded on 1 July 1935 as VF-1B “Shooting Stars”, the squadron has an illustrious history. Most recently it participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom while aboard USS Abraham Lincoln where it flew 585 sorties. At the time, the “Tomcatters” was flying F-14D Tomcats. The unit’s farewell to its Tomcats occurred in September 2006 during the “Tomcat Sunset”. It was the Navy’s last operational Tomcat squadron, and this will be reflected for time immemorial by their squadron name – “Tomcatters”! After this emotional farewell, VFA-31 began its transition to the F/A-18E Super Hornet, and today the “Fighting 31” specializes in night fighting. This is summed up in their motto of “We get ours at night”.

Dragon Warbirds is offering a fine 1/72 scale die-cast model of an F/A-18E Super Hornet from VFA-31. The model is beautifully detailed, capturing the sleek and powerful stance of this potent U.S. military aircraft. The model bears all the appropriate markings of this unit including the “AJ” tail code, and a cartoon impression of Felix the Cat running with a spherical bomb in his paws. FA-31 has staked its place in history by being the last Tomcat squadron.

About the 601st Squadron:

The Mk. V was nothing more than a Mk. II with the newer Merlin 45 series engine. This engine delivered slightly more takeoff power at 1,440 hp (1074 kW), but greatly increased the power available at higher altitudes due to a new two-speed supercharger design. While it was no Mk. IV, the Mk. V was able to hold its own with the 109Fs it was meeting.

1/72 diecast Fw 190A-3 "Black 1" Staffelkapitan 14. (Jabo)/JG 5, Petsamo / Northern Finland, June 1943

The Focke-Wulf (Fw-190) was Germany's most lethal fighter during WWII. It was also one of the most beautifully proportioned fighters of its time.

The pilot of this particular aircraft marked as "Black 1" was Uffz. Kurt Wendler.

In 1943 the Luftwaffe established a Jabo (JagdBomber - Fighter-bomber) unit within JG 5. Designated 14.(J)/JG 5 it was formed at Petsamo in mid-February 1943, using elements from 11./JG 5. The unit was equipped exclusively with the Fw 190A-2 and A-3 which was modified for the Jabo-role. The unit commander was Hptm. Friedrich-Wilhelm Strakeljahn, popularly known as "Straks".

The task of this Jabo unit was straightforward. They were to attack enemy ships with bombs and do as much damage as they could. In light of their small numbers they did remarkably well.

Uffz. Kurt Wendler was born on September 22nd, 1920 in Röhrsdorf and was shot down by a Soviet AA northeast of Petsamo on April 13th, 1943 and did not survive.

http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-94511236631939_2146_25877308

10 Naval Sqn was formed in Feb 1917 and was initially equipped with Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutters. They then converted to Sopwith Triplanes and by the time the Camels arrived later in 1917, Naval 10’s famous Triplane ‘Black Flight’ had already scored around 50 victories and were gaining a fearsome reputation within the German Air Service. Norman Miers MacGregor was one of 29 Aces to fly with ‘Naval 10’. He moved to the Sqn as a flight commander from 6 Naval Sqn late in 1917. He finished the war with 7 (possibly 8) kills to his name with the last two being gained in Camel B6299. As a ‘B’ Flight aircraft it was identified by the large white ‘B’ on the fuselage sides and the distinctive red and white striping around the cowling area and the rear decking behind the cockpit.

An excellent release, this mighty Spitfire showcases one of the aircraft that brilliantly led the defense of Malta in 1942.
British submarines and planes operating from the island fortress of Malta had sent thousands of tons of Axis ships to the bottom of the Mediterranean. Axis air forces were employed to neutralize the island's defenses to make way for an invasion under the code name Operation HERKULES. The Axis aerial attacks reached severe levels after 21 March 1942. Outnumbered and short of supplies, the island's British defenders clung on, with a series of deliveries of new Spitfires coming at critical times. In the end it was the Spitfires who saved the day and turned the tide, with the German offensive faltering after mid-May. In total, 500 Axis planes were destroyed or severely damaged, most of these accounted for by the remarkable Spitfire.
The Supermarine Spitfire was a single seat fighter used by the RAF and many Allied countries in World War II. It saw service during the whole of World War II, in all theaters of war, and in many different variants. More than 20,300 of all variants were built, and Spitfires remained in service well into the 1950's. In total there were 24 marks of Spitfire and many sub-variants within each mark. Late in 1940 the Mk. II started meeting a new German aircraft in combat. Essentially a cleaned up version of the Bf 109E that Spitfires and Hurricanes had bested the year before in the Battle of Britain, the new Franz (Friedrich) model was superior to the Mk. II Spitfire in many respects. The Mk. V proved so useful that it would go on to be the most produced version by far, with 94 Mk. VAs (eight-gun), 3,923 Mk. VBs (cannon) and 2,447 Mk.VCs.

Designed by R.J.Michell to meet a British Air Ministry specification, the Supermarine Spitfire first flown on March 5th, 1936. With its combination of beautiful fighter design, the excellent performance of its Rolls-Royce Merlin power plant and firepower provided by twin cannons and four machine guns, the Spitfire became an unrivaled symbol of victory. The Spitfire had 40 major variants and was built in greater numbers than any other British aircraft of the time. It flew operationally on every front between 1939 and 1945 and was engaged in every one of the Royal Air Force's major actions.

The first flight of the heavy P-47 took place on 6 May 1941. A series of modifications ultimately led to the P-47C-5, which was the principal sub-variant of the P47-C family. This variant was among the first Thunderbolts to be sent overseas for combat, and the 4th FG (Fighter Group) in England received this fighter.

This famous FG was built around "Eagle Squadron", a group of experienced American pilots who were serving with the RAF, many of whom were none too pleased to be trading in their nifty Spitfires!

Our flying turncoat is a 1:72 scale Hobby Master Ju-87 D3 Sidi Haneish LG13, Nov. 1942 "Captured Stuka" from Crossroads Diecast for $21.99.

http://www.hobbymaster.com.hk/images/info_pict_ha0135.gif

General Background

The Ju 87 was considered as one of the most important German military aircrafts during WWII. It was better known as the “Stuka” which means “Dive Bomber”.

While the Ju 87 achieved great success during the beginning of WWII due to its accuracy in bombing, it suffered from lack of speed and defense armament. Without the escort of German fighters the Stuka easily became preys for enemy high speed fighters. After the Battle of Britain the Ju 87 was seldom seen in actions in the continent.

In 1940, the Ju 87 D (the “Dora” series), with a more powerful engine Jumo 122F, was developed for the attack of heavily defended targets. In 1943, with the approaching invasion of Russia, the Ju87 G “Gustav” was developed for anti-tank purpose. It was fitted with two 37mm cannons under the main wing and the number 1 ace of it was the legendary Oberst (Colonel) Hans Ulrich Rudel who had achieved over 500 kills of Russian armor include one battle ship destruction.

The Aircraft

In late July 1942 eighteen Jeeps with SAS members began their initial attacks on LGs ( British term -Landing Grounds) landing strips. There were a string of these strips around Sidi Haneish 70 miles from El Alamein. During these attacks hundreds of German planes were destroyed but some were captured with little or no damage. The 601 Squadron became the owner of an Italian Air Force Stuka "D" from LG 13. The squadron added RAF markings as well as the squadron code "UF". The "Captured Stuka" had its bombs and machine guns removed and it was used from November 1942 to February 1943.

Product Description

In 1967, XS921 and other Lightning’s of 74 Sqn made the long journey to Tengah Air Base in Singapore and in doing so became the first RAF fighter unit to make such a journey using air to air refueling.

The deployment to Singapore, codenamed ‘Operation Hydraulic’, gave the RAF’s Far East Air Force (FEAF) a powerful supersonic fighter element in the region. This was deemed necessary in order to deter the territorial claims made by Indonesia against nearby Malaysia, a British protectorate. The show of strength proved successful and 74 Sqn departed Tengah in August 1971 with the squadron disbanding.

Its Lightning’s were taken over by 56 Sqn at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. In September 1985, while serving with 11 Sqn, Lightning XS921 was lost after developing technical problems while returning to RAF Binbrook after a training exercise but thankfully the pilot was able to make a successful ejection.

It took 300,000 man hours to produce just one Tiger I tank (approximately double that required for a Panther), but what a tank it was! Its two principal strengths were its main gun – an 8.8cm KwK 36 L/56 – and its armor of rolled homogeneous nickel-steel plate. Responding to popular demand, Dragon Armor has announced another spectacular fully built-up Tiger I tank in 1/35 scale. This new arrival is a Late Production variant, meaning it has characteristic features like steel road wheels and a monocular sight in the mantlet to the right of the gun barrel. This amazing model shows tank number 213 of Pz.Abt.301.

This tank unit supported Heeres Gruppe B in the Ardennes offensive in late 1944, where it paid a heavy toll in vehicles destroyed. Numerous Tigers were lost in the fighting in late December through to early January, before the remainder withdrew to refit in the Köln area of Germany. The unit remained on the Western Front until the war ended. This large-scale model from Dragon Armor sports a distinctive “stripy” three-color camouflage scheme. It has also received a light layer of weathering - this is especially obvious in places like the spare track links hung on the turret sides, as well as the metallic-looking track runs. This scale model is made to the highest standards of accuracy and craftsmanship, completely ready to defend its territory as Allied units threaten the Fatherland.

One of the most impressive artillery pieces ever produced must surely be the Gerät 040 series of self-propelled heavy siege mortars fielded by Germany in WWII. Weighing in at approximately 124 tons and with a length of 11.137m, these six massive war machines featured a 60cm barrel that could hurl a 2-ton shell a distance of 6.8km. To increase the weapon’s extremely short range, a 54cm gun barrel was subsequently manufactured and fitted to three of the Mörser vehicles. Now designated Gerät 041, the longer 7.1m barrel of the weapon increased the range to 10.4km.

One of these 54cm siege mortars has been meticulously recreated in miniature by Dragon Armor. The 1/35 scale vehicle depicted in this release is named “Thor”, which was the fourth vehicle to be produced. Serving with the 2nd Batterie of the 833rd schwere Artillerie Abteilung on the Eastern Front, “Thor” was eventually captured by the Soviets near the war’s end. Fully assembled and pre-painted, “Thor” constitutes an impressive model thanks to its sheer size and bulk. This Dragon Armor item is full of intricate detail, and it is presented in firing mode with the chassis lowered. The three-color camouflage scheme is particularly well done, lending the model a commanding presence. As a special bonus, a huge shell is included. This “god of thunder” bespeaks massive destructive power, and it’s ready for immediate display on any shelf big enough to take it!

Main Features:
- Includes a realistic diorama scene with BONUS piece of grassland and realistic background
- Includes display case
- True to 1/72 scale
- Fully accurate T-34
- Detailed markings

About the T-34:
The ancestry of the T-34 derives from the BT series of fast tanks developed in the USSR in the 1930's. These were discovered to be too lightly armoured and armed for the sort of combat that would be expected. The T-34 took the BT's Christie-type suspension and incorporated it into a much more robust tank (The BTs were derived from prototype fast tanks built by American tank designer J. Walter Christie, which were sold to the Soviet Union after the American military declined to buy them. The T-34 incorporates elements of the Christie suspension, in particular the large road wheels).

Development proper commenced in 1936, and a prototype was completed in 1939. Full scale production started in 1940. The T-34 was produced in two major variants, the basic T-34/76 with a 76-mm gun (simply called T-34, in Soviet service), and the T-34/85 with an 85-mm gun.

Between 1940 and 1944 nearly 40,000 T-34/76 tanks were produced.

http://www.dragonmodelsusa.com/dmlusa/propics/DIR_DRR/l/l_DRR60124.jpg (http://www.kampfgruppe.us/#)

Features:
- new-tooled upper super structure and lower hull
- true-scale model
- Historically accurate camouflage
- Detailed and weathered track links
- Dragons patented Zimmerit coating
- display case

The Ferdinand was a heavy assault tank designed by Porsche and built by Nibelungenwerke, especially for the needs of the Eastern Front. Ferdinand's design was based on Porsche's Tiger - VK 4501(P) prototype which proved to be prone to mechanical failures and was rejected in favour of Henschel's prototype.

About This Release,
It weighed more than 70 tons...It was the heaviest armored vehicle to enter combat in WWII…It boasted a powerful 128mm PaK44 L/55 gun…It was none other than the formidable Jagdtiger! Dragon now brings to collectors, a spectacular 1/72 scale model of this mighty German tank destroyer. The model is distinguished by the fact that it features the rare Porsche suspension system. Of the 88 Jagdtigers built, just 11 of the earliest vehicles were based on the Porsche suspension design, which had eight road wheels instead of the nine wheels on the later Henschel-designed setup.

This model represents a vehicle fighting against the advancing Allies in Alsace on the Western Front in 1945. It is from sPzJgAbt 653, one of only two heavy antitank battalions equipped with the Jagdtiger (the other was sPzJgAbt 512). Interestingly, only about 20% of Jagdtigers were lost as a result of combat damage, for the majority were abandoned and sabotaged by their crews usually when they broke down! Another interesting aspect of this model from Dragon Armor is the zimmerit coating, which adorns the hull and almost to the top of the superstructure sides. This is produced by Dragon’s high-tech patented zimmerit process. The top of the boxy fighting compartment is also draped in a tarpaulin, which provided some form of additional weather protection for the crew. The accurate scale model is coated in a precise three-coat camouflage scheme. It’s also authentically weathered, which enhances the scale look of the zimmerit. All in all, this is a fine rendition of the mightiest armored vehicle to fire in anger during the world’s largest ever conflict.

Last to lift off this week is a great pair of 1:48 scale Eagles International P-51B's from the Flying Mule for only $39.99 without a coupon code and an amazing $35.99 with it. You can pick up the Eagles International 10007 North American P-51B Mustang Diecast Model RAF No.315 (Polish) Sqn, Eugeniusz Horbaczewski, RAF Brenzett, England, June 1944.

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/EI-10007_01_lrg.jpg

Designed to meet an RAF requirement for fighter-bomber and reconnaissance aircraft, the P-51 Mustang was first flown on October 26th, 1940. This versatile aircraft was capable of escorting bombers on long-range missions, engaging in dogfights, and dropping down to destroy German targets on the ground. At least eight versions of the P-51 were produced, but it was the definitive P-51D that gave the Mustang its classic warbird appearance. Britain and the US both tested the airframe with the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, which gave the aircraft tremendous performance gains. The Truman Senate War Investigating Committee called the Mustang "the most aerodynamically perfect pursuit plane in existence."

The Eagles International range presents highly-detailed, ready-made diecast models of military aircraft.

Eagles International diecast airplanes feature:

Diecast metal construction with some plastic components.
Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details.

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/EI-10004_01_lrg.jpg

David Lee 'Tex' Hill was a pre-war Navy Pilot, recruited in 1941 by General Claire Chennault to join the AVG, better known as the 'Flying Tigers'. The 51st Pursuit Group later became the 51st Fighter Group seeing action in the India-Burma Campaign. Assigned to the 14th Air Force in October 1943 they moved to China where they received P51s in 1945.
The plane that made the Mustang famous! The P-51B (Inglewood, CA Manf.) and the P-51C (Dallas, TX Manf.) was a major progression to the original Allison powered P-51A Mustang. The British designation for the B/C Mustang was Mustang III. While the P-51A was a fine low altitude fighter, it suffered from the lack of a two speed, two stage supercharger for its Allison engine. Most aerial combat in Europe took place above 15,000 feet, right where the P-51A was running out of steam. The Allison was early into its development and wouldn't display its full power until the P-82 twin Mustang, too late for the war. The P-51B/C would mate the Spitfire's well developed Merlin engine (racing since 1935), licensed for manufacture in the US by Packard, to its sleek airframe. A four bladed propeller and the new supercharger turned the P-51 into one of, if not the best fighters of WWII.The P-51B/C was actually faster than the P-51D due to combat weight increases. 3,378 B's and C's were built by North American Aviation (Later Rockwell International and today Boeing).

Each of our armor picks this week can enter your collection for less than $10. The little brother is the 1:72 scale Dragon German Super Heavy Tank E-100, Brandenburg Gate, Berlin 1945, which Pete's has for $9.75.

http://www.dragonmodelsusa.com/dmlusa/propics/DIR_DRR/l/l_DRR60155.jpg (http://www.kampfgruppe.us/#)

The E-100 project was commissioned in order to standardize parts. It was to be built in classes of varying sizes to replace existing vehicles. Different types were designated a number indicating their weight in tons: E 10, E 25, E 50 (Panther replacement), E 75 (Tiger replacement) and E 100.

Of these only the E-100 project was actually started. Construction of the E-100 prototype proceeded slowly at Henschel's test plant after Hitler's order to cease work on super-heavy tanks, and at the end of the war only the bare hull and suspension were completed.

We start our Memorial Day selections with two pieces of German World War II armor. The first is for the vet on a budget. It's the 1:72 scale Dragon Armor Sd.Kfz. 181 Tiger-I Mid Production, sPzAbt 509, 1944 (#60019) from JT's for $9.99.

http://www.dragonmodelsusa.com/dmlusa/propics/DIR_DRR/l/l_DRR60019.jpg (http://www.kampfgruppe.us/#)

This particular Tiger I was part of the 509th Tank Battalion, mounted the lethal 88 mm L/56 cannon and was fighting on the Russian front in 1944.

About the Tiger I:

The Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf. E Tiger I was a heavy tank of World War II, developed by Germany.

Originally developed under the name Pzkw VI Ausf. H the tank was redesigned as Ausf. E (Ausführung Ger. "version") in March 1943. The tank was also known as the Mark VI-E, Panzer VI-E, PzKpfw VI-E or Sd.Kfz. 181 (Sonderkraftfahrzeug 181), although in general it was commonly known as the Tiger I (after Tiger II was produced) or simply the Tiger.

The Tiger I was in use from late 1942 until the German surrender in 1945. It was given its nickname by Ferdinand Porsche. The design served as the basis for other armoured vehicles, including the Tiger II, or King Tiger tank, and the Sturmtiger self-propelled gun.

The Tiger's crew training manual, the Tigerfibel, became a souvenir item after WWII.

Tigers were capable of destroying their most common opponents, the T-34, Sherman, or Churchill IV at ranges exceeding 1,600 m. In contrast, the T-34s equipped with the 76.2 mm gun could not penetrate the Tiger frontally at any range, but could achieve a side penetration at approximately 500 meters firing the BR-350P APCR ammunition. The T-34-85's 85 mm gun could penetrate the Tiger from the side at over 1,000 meters. The IS-2's 122 mm gun could destroy the Tiger at ranges exceeding 1,000 meters from any aspect.

The M4 Sherman's 75 mm gun could not penetrate the Tiger frontally at any range, and needed to be within 500 meters to achieve a side penetration. The British 17-pounder as used on the Sherman Firefly, if firing its APDS round, could penetrate frontally at over 1,500 meters. The US 76 mm gun, if firing the most common APCBC ammunition, could not penetrate the Tiger frontally at any range, and needed to be within 1,000 meters to get a side kill. However, if the 76 mm was firing HVAP ammunition (usually in short supply), frontal penetrations were possible at 1,000 meters.

The Tiger's top road speed of 38 km/h compares to 37 km/h for its most comparable opponent, the IS-2. Both were substantially slower than most medium tanks. Early Tigers had a top speed of 45 km/h; the top speed was reduced to 38 km/h when engine governors were installed in November 1943. The Tiger had reliability problems throughout its service life; Tiger units frequently entered combat understrength due to breakdowns. It was rare for any Tiger unit to complete a road march without losing vehicles due to breakdown. It also had poor radius of action. Surprisingly for a heavy tank, it had a lower ground pressure bearing than many smaller tanks, the most notable exception being the Soviet T-34.

The Tiger's armour and firepower, however, were feared by all its opponents. In tactical defense, its poor mobility was less of an issue. Whereas Panthers had been the more serious threat to the allied tanks, Tigers had a bigger psychological effect on Allied crews, causing a "Tiger hysteria". Allied crews would sometimes evade rather than confront Tigers, even if a tank only looked like one, such as the Panzer IV with turret skirts applied. In the Normandy campaign, it could take four to five Shermans to knock out a single Tiger tank by maneuvering to its weaker flank or rear armor; the Soviet T-34s fared similarly against the German tanks, as had the German PzIII earlier against the Soviet heavy tanks. An accepted Allied tactic was to engage the Tiger as a group, one attracting the attention of the Tiger crew while the others attacked the sides or rear of the vehicle. Since the ammunition and fuel were stored in the sponsons, a side penetration often resulted in a kill. This was, however, a risky tactic, and often resulted in the loss of several Allied vehicles. It took a great deal of tactical skill to eliminate Tiger units.

Tigers were usually employed in separate heavy tank battalions under Army command. These battalions would be deployed to critical sectors, either for breakthrough operations or, more typically, counterattacks. A few favored divisions, such as the Grossdeutschland or some of the low-numbered Waffen-SS divisions had a handful of Tigers.

On July 7th of 1943, a single Tiger tank commanded by SS-Oberscharführer Franz Staudegger from the 2nd Platoon of 13th Panzer Company of 1st SS Panzer Grenadier Division "LSSAH" engaged a Soviet group of some 50 T-34 tanks around Psyolknee (the southern sector of the Kursk salient). Staudegger used up his entire ammunition after destroying some 22 Soviet tanks, while the rest retreated. For his achievement, Franz Staudegger was awarded the Knight's Cross.

On August 8th of 1944, a single Tiger commanded by SS-Unterscharführer Willi Fey from the 1st Company of sSSPzAbt 102, engaged a British tank column, destroying some 14 out of 15 Shermans, followed by one more later in the day using his last two rounds of ammunition. sSSPzAbt 102 lost all of its Tigers during fighting in Normandy, but reported 227 Allied tanks destroyed during a period of 6 weeks.

The Tiger is particularly associated with the name of SS-Haupsturmführer Michael Wittmann of schwere SS-Panzerabteilung 101, who was one of the most successful tank commanders of World War II. He worked his way up, commanding various vehicles and finally a Tiger I. In one day he destroyed over two dozen Allied vehicles including several tanks; and single-handedly held up an entire advance until his tank was knocked out and abandoned at the Battle of Villers-Bocage.

Over 10 Tiger tank commanders had over 100 kills on their account, including: Johannes Bölter with 139+ Kills, Otto Carius with 150+ Kills, Kurt Knispel with 168 Kills, and Michael Wittmann with 138 Kills.

Moving tracks on detailed rotating wheels.
Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details.

From World War I, we next bring you the Corgi 1:48 scale Spad X111C-1, 2 (S504), George Guynemer, French Air Service, SPA3 Escadrille, September 1917 from The Drop Zone for $21.95.

http://www.thedzd.com/store/i/is.aspx?path=/shared/images/Corgi/AA37902.jpg&lr=t&bw=850&bh=850

Georges Marie Ludovic Jules Guynemer, was revered by the people of France as the veteran of over 600 air combats. Twice wounded and awarded 26 citations, the recipient of the highest honors for galantry France could bestow, his official victory total is 53, but it has been suggested that the true figure is closer to 100. A list of his victories reveals a pattern of intense activity interspersed with gaps of sometimes several weeks. Some are accounted for by the periods of inactivity that often happen in war, but constantly on the brink of nervous collapse, others mark Guynemer’s absences for treatment of more than merely physical wounds. Given the consideration of a later more enlightened age, Georges Guynemer might have been relieved from combat in March 1916 to live out the balance of his life a much decorated but obscure French airman, with eight victories and a proud record in the service of his country.

Last but certainly not least, we salute the armed services of the U.S. by way of the 1:48 scale Hobby Master F2A ""Bufflao"", US Navy VF-2, USS Lexington, 1940 ""2-F-1"", (limted edition, ONLY 1000 WORLDWIDE) from Pete's for $34.95.

The Brewster F2A Buffalo was USN's first mono-wing fighter. The status of the “Buffalo” is somewhat controversial in the history of aviation. It was designed by US but saw its real success only in Finland, a co-belligerent of Germany during WWII. It was designed as a carrier based fighter but only saw combat from land bases.

The most distinctive feature of the Buffalo was the retractable landing gear. With the right pilot the plane was quite capable in combat. Some historians believe that some units of the Commonwealth squadrons may have achieved a 2 to 1 kill ratio in the Far East.

The second VF-2 was equipped with Brewster F2A2-2 Buffaloes in 1940 and called the USS Lexington home. In spite of Brewster's engineers' efforts weak landing gear remained a problem in this newer version. The "Fighting Two" was composed entirely of Chief Petty Officers so they became known as the "Flying Chiefs". This squadron was considered the "hottest US squadron in the Pacific" but they were still disestablished mid-1942. The last US combat for the Brewsters came at the Battle of Midway being replaced with F4F Wildcats.

The advanced Soviet T-34 tank design proved a nasty surprise to German troops when it was first confronted in the invasion of Russia in 1941. By the time of Operation Barbarossa, a total of 967 T-34's were available, though thousands more were to be manufactured by the end of WWII in improved forms. The T-34 Model 1941 featured an improved F-34 76.2mm gun with superior antitank performance than its predecessor.

The Dragon Armor range now includes a T-34/76 Mod. 1941 from the 116th Tank Brigade. The 1/72 scale model is shown as a tank fighting in 1942, with the name “Lazo” emblazoned on the sides of the turret. Many tanks were daubed with painted slogans, a practice commonly used by Russians to boost morale. In this case, Sergey Lazo was a Communist leader at the time of the October 1917 Revolution in the Far East of Russia. This model is expertly assembled and finished by craftsmen, and it is full of accurate detail. Dragon is extremely pleased to offer this model of the legendary tank that shouldered the burden of combat in The Great Patriotic War.

Main Features:
- Completely new-tooled Maus mold
- Accurate air intake pertaining to V2 version
- True-scale model
- Historically accurate 3-tone camouflage
- Detailed and weathered track links
- Includes display case

About the Maus:
The Panzerkampfwagen VIII Maus (Sd.Kfz 205) is the heaviest tank with completed working prototypes built during World War II. The basic design known as the VK70001/Porsche Type 2005 was suggested by Ferdinand Porsche to Adolf Hitler in June of 1942, who subsequently approved it. The design up to then had been the culmination of work done by Porsche who had won the contract for the heavy tank that March. Work on the design began in earnest and the first prototype would be ready in 1943 and was initially received the name Mammut (Mammoth). This was reportedly changed to Maeuschen (Mousy) in December of 1942 and finally Maus (Mouse) in February of 1943.

Most of the life of the working Maus prototypes was in testing around Kummersdorf and at the proving grounds in Böblingen, but the V1 and V2 versions were also involved in one known mission in a combat area that ended in both tanks being over-run and captured by Soviet forces.

Aiken's Airplanes has our first flying selection, the Corgi 1:72 scale Junkers Ju-87R-2 ‘A5+HH - 1./StG 1, Krainici, Bulgaria, 1941. This plane from the Legends line goes for $24.95.

http://www.aikensairplanes.com/images/US32509_Stuka_Bulgaria.jpg

This machine is unusual in having the entire tail unit painted yellow – this was presumably done because the Ju 87 was the mount of a formation leader. Note the Gruppe emblem on the cowling – a stylized depiction of ‘Hans Huckebein’, who was a cartoon raven popular in the 19th century. Hastily summoned from North Africa to reinforce StG 2 in Bulgaria immediately prior to the invasion of Yugoslavia and Greece, I./StG 1 nevertheless found time to apply the yellow theatre markings specified for Operation Marita (Balkans invasion) by the Luftwaffe high command.

WE fly toward summer in our last selection this week, the Hobby Master 1:72 scale Avenger TBM-3E2 Dutch Marine Luchtvaartdienst, 1954 from the Monkey Depot for $27.07.

http://www.monkeydepot.com/v/vspfiles/photos/HM0265-DD501-2.jpg

The TBF/M "Avenger" was the biggest single engine aircraft during the WWII. She was ordered into production in Dec 1940 with first delivery just in time for the Battle of Midway. The "Avenger" was characterized by its rigid and strong body and its versatilities. She started out as a torpedo bomber but it soon took the duties as a close-support bomber, a patrol aircraft and even a trainer. After the war the Avenger was also used as crop dusters and forest fire water bombers.

Fifty TBM-3 were delivered in 1953-4 to the Royal Netherlands Naval Air service and these were ex-planes from the US Navy. They were used as submarine 'killer' and some were deployed from the Dutch navy aircraft carrier “Karel Doorman”.

First on the field this week is the Dragon Armor Sturmtiger 60025 1:72 scale from JT's for just $8.99. Or is it the 60026 version that is the picture of the vehicle?

The Tiger-Mörser, 38 cm RW61 auf Sturm(panzer)mörser Tiger, or Sturmmörser Tiger, more commonly known as the Sturmtiger or Sturmpanzer VI, was a World War II German assault gun built on the Panzer VI Tiger I chassis armed with a large naval mortar, the 38cm SturmMörser RW61 L/5.4. Its primary task was to provide heavy fire support for infantry units fighting in urban areas. Only 18 were built in total, from battle-damaged Tiger tanks.

The original role of the Sturmtiger was intended to be as a heavy infantry support vehicle, to help with attacks on heavily fortified or built-up areas. By the time the first Sturmtigers were available however, the situation for Germany had changed for the worse, with the Wehrmacht being almost exclusively on the defensive rather than the offensive.

Three new Panzer companies were raised to operate the Sturmtiger: Panzer Sturmmörser Kompanien (PzStuMrKp) 1000, 1001 and 1002. These originally were supposed to be equipped with fourteen vehicles, but this figure was later reduced to four each, divided into two platoons.

PzStuMrKp 1000 was raised on 13 August 1944 and fought during the Warsaw Uprising with two vehicles, as did the prototype in a separate action, which may have been the only time the Sturmtiger was used in its intended role. PzStuMrKp 1001 and 1002 followed in September and October. Both PzStuMrKp 1000 and 1001 served during the Ardennes Offensive, with a total of seven Sturmtigers.

After this offensive, the Sturmtigers were used in the defense of Germany proper, mainly if not exclusively at the Western front. They proved to be excellent defensive weapons, hard to destroy except by air attack or heavy artillery bombardment. Few Sturmtigers were therefore destroyed by enemy action, with most being destroyed or abandoned by their crews after either a mechanical breakdown or because of fuel shortage.

Two Sturmtigers survived World War II, one being on display at the Deutsches Panzermuseum at Munster, Germany and one at the Russian Tank museum in Kubinka. A 380 mm Raketenwerfer is in the collection of the Bovington Tank Museum.

Because of the rugged dense jungle growth on many Pacific islands the use of tanks was limited. The tank did play significant roles on these islands as infantry support. The M4 had an escape hatch added to the floor but in the Pacific tank crews used it for the opposite purpose. They used the hatch to recover wounded infantry and return them for medical care. In the Pacific some units had many inventive means of trying to protect the tank and crew from the enemy. Some added track blocks to the sides of the turret, or on the glacis along with sand bags. Some added nails others added wooden planks or even heavy steel mesh domes placed over the hatches with about two inches of clearance. The domes were referred to as “bird cages” and along with the other innovations were meant to prevent the enemy from placing satchel charges directly on the tank especially the hatches that probably were the most vulnerable part of the armor. Some of the tank crews couldn’t decide one method so they employed just about all the various options. It was quite usual for tank crews to paint a name that started with the same letter as their Company on the side of the tank. Since this tank belonged to Company D that’s why “Doris” appears on this particular example.

Known as the “Fighting Fourth” the 4th Marine Division was comprised of many units. One of the units was “D” Company of the 4th Marine Tank Battalion. The 4th Marine Division was formed on May 12, 1943 and was made up entirely of reservists except for 2 officers. It also was the first Marine Division to go directly in to battle and to capture territory held by occupying Japanese forces. The Division fought in some of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific, Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. The assault on Iwo Jima began on Feb 19 1945. The 4th Marine Tank Division landings began at 0940 when LSMs delivered the first tanks on Yellow Beach. Because of the problems caused by the volcanic sand it wasn’t until 1300 before all the tanks were ashore. Landing on Iwo Jima was uncontested but when the beaches became congested with men and equipment that instantly sank in loose volcanic ash and became bogged down the Japanese defenders unleashed their big guns, mortars and snipers. The scene was one of carnage as men crawled along the shifting surface desperately trying to advance to the shelter of dunes or into shell holes made by the naval barrage that preceded the landing. Under the support of the tanks from the 4th MTB the Marines slowly worked their way toward their objectives. They encountered several long delays while engineers cleared mine-fields while under heavy fire. During their advance the tanks helped clear fortified caves and pill boxes and provided physical cover for the foot soldiers. The Japanese had definitely prepared for the invasion and intended to make the island their last stand with no surrender. On March 26, 1945 after five long bloody weeks Iwo Jima was finally cleared of enemy forces. The U.S. casualties totaled over 26,000 with over 7,000 dead while only 1,000 of the original 20,000 Japanese defenders survived. These sacrifices made it possible for B-29 bombers to make 2,400 unscheduled landings with 27,000 crewmen on their return flights from bombing mainland Japan. The 4th Marine Division was the first into action and they were the first to be sent back to the U.S. Where it was deactivated on November 28, 1945 and reactivated in 1966. For their actions in the Pacific Campaign the 4th Marine Division was awarded these medals and commendations:

4 Medals of Honor 111 Navy Cross 646 Silver Stars 2,517 Bronze Stars 17,722 Purple Hearts Presidential Unit Citation with 2 Bronze Stars Navy Unit Commendation Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Stars WWII Victory Medal

Of all the Medals of Honor that were awarded to Marines in WWII over 25% of them were because of their actions on Iwo Jima.

Last in the air this week is a U.S. burner, the 1:72 scale Century Wings Lockheed Martin SR-71B USAF 9th SRW, Beale AFB, CA, 1968 from Aim Higher Jets for $99.95 or just $84.96 with their 15% off sale coupon code.

http://www.centurywings.com/model/sr71_type-b/type-b_main.jpg

First in the field this week is the Dragon 1:35 scale Tiger 1 sPzAbt 508, #1, Italy, 1944, w/Zimmerit from The Flying Mule for $45.99.

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/DM-61021_01_lrg.jpg

Schwere Panzer Abteilung (s.Pz.Abt.) 508 was formed in August 1943, and was initially equipped with the formidable Tiger I tank. With an inventory of 45 Tiger Is, the unit was ordered to counterattack the Allied bridgehead at Anzio between December 1943 and January 1944. The Tigers had to road march 200km from a railhead, and 60% of tanks broke down on the narrow, winding mountain roads on the way to Anzio. In any event, the massed Tigers of s.Pz.Abt. 508, plus Panthers and Elefants from other units, were repulsed mainly by naval gunfire. During the Italian campaign, the unit received 32 further Tiger I tanks up till June 1944 to make up combat losses. Finally, s.Pz.Abt. 508 turned in its 15 remaining Tigers to s.Pz.Abt. 504 in February 1945 before returning to Germany to train on the Kingtiger.Dragon Armor has produced a fine 1/35 scale model of a Tiger I from this famous unit. The fully assembled and finished model is a Late Production variant of a tank fighting in Italy in 1944. A notable aspect of this model is the Zimmerit coating reproduced in exacting detail, this item being the first 1/35 Tiger I with Zimmerit in the Dragon Armor range. To enable the depiction of Zimmerit, a completely new turret, upper and lower hull were produced. The Zimmerit is expertly crafted, representing as good a finish as only skillful modelers could achieve. The model is finished in an overall three-color camouflage finish, and this has been carefully painted onto the vehicle, which is itself an accurately dimensioned and detailed replica of the original tank. This Zimmerit coating adds a new look to an already popular tank, and contributes to an aggressive and attractive subject from the Italian theater.

Production of the Tiger began in August 1942, and by August 1944 1,355 of these tanks had been built. The 88mm main gun was the most powerful anti-tank gun in use by any army. The superior mobility of Allied tanks allowed them to attack from behind or from the side in the hope of taking a Tiger down. The influence of Tiger tanks on allied morale grew to almost mythical proportions, and was known as "Tigerphobia." Tigers destroyed tremendous amounts of enemy equipment and often just the sight of a Tiger would induce the Russian tankers to withdraw.

Dragon's 1:35 scale Tiger I tanks are constructed almost entirely of diecast plastic, which allows for the greatest possible level of detail. Each release spotlights an early, mid or late production version with subtle changes such as replacement of the commander's cupola and replacement of the rubber rimmed road wheels with steel wheels. Intricately detailed air intake filters are included for tropical/desert theater releases. This mold features a rotating turret with an elevating spring-loaded recoiling cannon and a movable forward machine gun. Opening hatches and detailed hull accessories add the finishing touches to a stunningly accurate model.

The Dragon Models "1:35 Dragon Armor" range presents highly-detailed, ready-made plastic models of military vehicles. Dragon Armor tanks require no gluing or painting. Each model is an instant display piece or diorama centerpiece straight from the box and is 100% true to scale... these don't look like model tanks, they look like tanks!. Color, camouflage and unit markings are carefully researched for maximum authenticity, marking the difference between and authentic scale model tank and a "toy" tank.

Dragon Models "1:35 Dragon Armor" display model vehicles feature:

Molded plastic construction.
Rotating turret, elevating cannon and accurate hull.
Selected opening hatches.
Painted, fitted, non-moving tracks and detailed non-rotating wheels.
Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details.

We celebrate the end of July knowing that our politicians in D.C. have reached a deal to avoid a default by the federal government (at least for a while). They haven't reduced the federal deficit, mind you. They have merely made a slight downward adjustment of the rate at which it will be growing each year. So for each dollar we will be "investing" (aka "spending"), we'll have to borrow at least 40 cents of it. Here's hoping that your financial position is superior to that of the feds, so you can "invest" in one of our picks this week.

Our first armor investment vehicle of the week is the long retired King & Country 1:30 scale Afrika Korps Panzer II from KingsX for $75.00.

This week's installment is a bit late, as I was off the grid while attending my 60th wedding anniversary celebration for my Aunt and Uncle at a small town in south central Illinois. The Uncle is a World War II combat vet and my Aunt's dad was an army doctor. Although the two vets did not meet until years later, they both found themselves in the Pilsen area at the end of the war. It was there that my Uncle shook hands with Soviet troops advancing from the east.

Our first selection this week ties to that time and theater. It is a Forces of Valor 1:32 scale D-Day U.S. M3A1 Half-Track (Normandy,1944) from OB's for $26.95.

Designed to transport troops, the Bradley can transport up to six fully equipped soldiers, as well as the three crew members.

1:32 scale Bradley Fighting Vehicle by Forces of Valor is a composite of metal and plastic construction. The upper hull and turret are diecast metal with plastic parts being used for smaller, highly detailed pieces. The 360 degree rotating turret, along with opening crew hatches and rolling rubber tracks make this armored vehicle seem almost real. This Bradley has active suspension and the a rear door lowers to reveal a detailed interior. The lethal 25mm chain gun with articulating aerial gun sight pivots in unison with a 7.63 machine gun, and the turret-mounted TOW missile system has an articulating front seal and can be raised to firing position. Numerous battlefield and diorama accessories round-out this comprehensive package.

Many are aware that in the U.S. all of us worked until April 12th to pay all taxes. However according to the the Tax Foundation, it was not until two days ago, August 12, 2011, that we would have had to work to pay the entire cost of government (including the cost of deficit spending and regulatory burden). Before 2009 the latest such date was July 21st. Under President Reagan it held steady at July 4th--truly a double Independence Day.

Now that you have your own money to spend, you lucky devil, our first suggestion on how you might do so is, ironically enough, with Canadian vendor the Spitfire Emporium with Canadian dollars. Some of the tank crews could’t decide one method so they employed just about all the various options.

Because of the problems caused by the volcanic sand it was’t until 1300 before all the tanks were ashore.

We open this week with a Dragon Models 1:72 scale Armor Collector Series 60088 Krupp Sd.Kfz.161 Panzer IV F2 Display Model German Army PzRgt15 11.PzDiv, #12, Russia, 1942 from the Flying Mule for just $9.99.

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/DM-60088_01_thm.jpghttp://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/DM-60088_02_thm.jpghttp://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/DM-60088_03_thm.jpghttp://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/DM-60088_04_thm.jpghttp://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/DM-60088_05_thm.jpghttp://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/DM-60088_06_thm.jpg

Over 6,000 examples of Panzerkampfwagen IV tanks were produced between 1943 and 1945. Armed with a short-barrel 75mm gun and driven by a 250-horsepower engine, the Panzer IV quickly became the workhorse of Panzer Divisions. After the appearance of the Russian T-34—with its dominant guns and heavier, sloped armor—the Panzer needed design modifications such as thick side and turret skirts, a new gun (the KwK 40 75mm L/48) and a larger turret. With these upgrades, the Panzer IV proved equal to the Soviet T-34 and was also effective against British tanks and American M-4 Sherman Medium Tanks.

Dragon's 1:72 scale Panzer IV is constructed almost entirely of diecast plastic, which allows for the greatest possible level of detailing. Featuring a 360-degree rotating turret with elevating cannon, the model's hatches, hinges, welded amour plating and turret are all stunningly accurate, and the same level of detailing has been applied to the vehicle's track system. The model's underside features riveted armor plating and leaf-spring suspension. Subtle airbrushed weathering with hand-painted tools and equipment add a finishing touch.

The Dragon Models "1:72 Dragon Armor Collector Series" range presents highly-detailed, ready-made plastic models of military vehicles.

Dragon Models "1:72 Dragon Armor Collector Series" display model vehicles feature:

Molded plastic construction (some releases include diecast metal components).
Rotating turret, elevating cannon and accurate hull.
Painted, fitted, non-moving tracks and detailed non-rotating wheels.
Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details.

Our final selection for this week is the Hobby Master 1:72 scale Air Power Series HA3301 Northrop F-5N Tiger II Diecast Model USN VFC-111 Sundowners, NAS Key West, FL from the Flying Mule for $34.99.

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/HM-HA3301_07_lrg.jpg

VFC-111 (Fighter Composite Squadron) was originally VFC-13 and was renamed in November 2006. VFC-111 assumed the name, insignia and callsign "Sundowners" when VF-111 was disestablished as an F-14 squadron. The "Sundowners" are a USN Reserve squadron based at Naval Air Station Key West Florida. It operates 12 of the 41 Northrop F-5N Tiger II aircraft in operation. Their role is that of an adversary to help train pilots in air combat tactics. The F-5N is supposed to see service through to 2015.

Designed partly to meet a US Navy requirement for a low-cost, low-maintenance fighter to operate from Escort Carriers, the F-5 first flew on July 30, 1959. Development of the F-5 continued even after the Navy withdrew its Escort Carriers, and the aircraft eventually evolved into the light, supersonic "Freedom Fighter," serving US allies during the Cold War and as a supersonic trainer in the US. The second-generation F-5 ("Tiger II") also served US allies, but because it was small and maneuverable like a MiG it was also used by the US military as a training and "aggressor" aircraft, acting as the opposing force during military wargames.

Hobby Master’s 1:72 scale F-5 Tiger II is a sleek and fast looking model that uses a clever mix of metal and plastic components with near-seamless construction. The solid metal wing has sharp-edged plastic leading edge root extensions appropriate to the variant being modeled. The removable canopy provides a clear view of the cockpit’s interior features such as the pad-printed front and side mounted instrument panels. Landing gear and doors have been included as one piece sub-assemblies that allow for quick and easy configuration for ground display. The series covers both fighter variants with optional ordnance configurations (see photos) and the long nose reconnaissance variant.

The Hobby Master "1:72 Air Power Series" presents detailed, ready-made diecast models of military aircraft.

Optional extended/retracted landing gear.
Presentation stand to display the aircraft "in flight".

We close with two 1:72 scale Gemini Aces P-51's. AirlineMuseum has the P-51B Mustang Ferocious Frankie for $26.50.

http://www.geminijets.com/pics/GAUSA2005.jpg

GeminiAces is a new premium line of highly detailed, historically accurate 1:72 scale die cast warbirds and military aircraft!

Following in the footsteps of our ever-popular GeminiJets line of civilian airliners, we have brought serious collecting to the military realm with our new GeminiAces. Featured details include:
- Optional landing gear up/down positions
- Movable control surfaces
- Optional under wing fuel tanks
- Photo etched rotating metal propellers
- Superior quality graphics

The Mustang transformed the air war over occupied Europe and allowed the systematic destruction of Luftwaffe fighter units. The 'Yellow Nosed' Mustangs from Bottisham supported D-Day operations and were given the familiar black and white identification markings to aid Allied spotters. 'Ferocious Frankie' was the mount of Wallace E Hopkins, who named the aircraft after his wife Frankie. He flew this aircraft, before transferring to the later D and K models, ending the war operating from forward airfields in France and Belgium.
Hopkins combat career ended with the title 'Ace', as 8 enemy fighters (and 1.5 damaged) fell victim to his guns!

Here's his plane:

Sorry that this week's installment is a couple days late. However due to central Texas wildfire mandatory evacuations in multiple areas, including one where we live, made it next to impossible to post until today.

Our first pick is at least 45% contained. It is the Dragon 1:35 scale DRR61020 Tiger I Late Production Pz.Abt.301 Köln 1945 from Great Models for $39.95.

http://www.dragonmodelsusa.com/dmlusa/propics/DIR_DRR/l/l_DRR61020.jpg (http://www.dragonmodelsusa.com/dmlusa/prodd.asp?pid=DRR61020#)

- Highly popular and collectible item
- True to 1/35 scale
- Fully accurate mold
- Fully assembled
- Historically accurate markings and insignia
- Includes protective display case

Here's the hot spot to order:

Perhaps as little as 15 minutes after we left Stead on Friday, there was a horrible and tragic crash at the Reno Air Races. Today's newspaper reports that 9 have died and 69 were hurt. Of those 69 injured, 31 were admitted to hospital and 8 of those people are in critical condition. The Cardinals and the Rangers have earned the right to play in the World Series. As they are my two favorite teams (the Brewers are #3), I will be sitting back, beer in hand, and smiling for next 4 to 7 games. Let's hope we hit a few out the park this week, just like what happened in the two "pitching duels" that decided the pennant winners.

First to the batter's box is the Corgi 1:50 scale KRAUSSE-MAFFEI 8 Ton Sdkfz Half Track German Army--Hohenstaufen, Germany 1945. This History (now the Mega Ice Road Pickers) Channel edition is offered for $24.99 by the Toy Headquarters.

For those that prefer the 1:72 scale, our second pick is the Panzerstahl Sd.Kfz.234/2 Puma - No.415 from The Drop Zone for $16.48.

http://www.panzerstahl.com/images/88014/88014_main.jpg

* true to scale model made from plastic for highest detail and metal parts
* fully assembled
* markings pad printed for ultimate realistic effect
* historically accurate painted and marked
* including protective case for display
* package comes with open window display
* limited production!

The Sd.Kfz.234 is the successor of the eight wheeled armored cars Sd.Kfz.231 which were developed in the 30's. These new armored cars had a new design and a powerful engine. All axles are driven and steerable. The most advantage was the feature of two drivers - one for normal driving and one for backward driving. So they could drive back within seconds without turning, which was an important feature for a recon vehicle that the 234 initially was supposed to be. The weight of slightly below 12 tons and the 220hp engine allowed a top speed of around 90km/h!

This version, called the "Puma" was armed with a 5cm KwK39/1 L/60 and a coaxial 7,92mm MG42 in a fully rotatable turret. There were 55 rounds for the main gun carried within the vehicle and the "Puma" was the first heavy armed recon tank of the Wehrmacht. From December 1943 to June 1944 only 101 pieces of the "Puma" were produced. Only 13 of a Pz.Sp.Kp.a were outfitted with the long range Fu12 transmitter.

Our next pick is a black (and other flavor of big) cat hunter. It is the Tamiya 1:48 scale British Sherman IC Firefly from Micro Macro Mundo for $43.84.

http://www.micromacromundo.com/tamiyal/TA26524.jpg

As Britain struggled to develop tanks capable of equaling the superior German Panzers, the decision was made to convert existing stocks of M4 Sherman tanks, delivered to the UK as part of the Lend-Lease Act. The so-called Sherman Firefly featured a long-barreled 17 pdr. anti-tank gun, that was much more effective than the original 75mm gun, capable of penetrating a Tiger I's frontal armor at over 1,000 meters using regular ammunition. The majority of Fireflies were adapted from M4A4 tanks, designated Sherman V by the British, while some were made using the earlier M4, or Sherman I in British usage. Vehicles rearmed with a 17 pdr. gun were given the suffix C, with the resulting units being Sherman VC and Sherman IC.

About the Model

Length: 151mm
Die-cast chassis for added weight and realism.
High-quality pad-printed markings depict tank from Polish 2nd Armored Division.
Different road wheels also set this finished model apart from the assembly kit version.
Conveniently includes display base.

Next on the field is the 1:35 scale Dragon Henschel Sd.Kfz.181 Tiger German Army sPzAbt 508, #1, Italy, 1944, w/Zimmerit from the sale at The Flying Mule for $45.99.

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/DM-61021_01_thm.jpghttp://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/DM-61021_02_thm.jpghttp://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/DM-61021_03_thm.jpghttp://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/DM-61021_04_thm.jpghttp://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/DM-61021_05_thm.jpghttp://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/DM-61021_06_thm.jpg

Length: 7.25" Width: 4" Henschel Sd.Kfz.181 Tiger

504 in February 1945 before returning to Germany to train on the Kingtiger.

Dragon Armor has produced a fine 1/35 scale model of a Tiger I from this famous unit.

Pad printed markings and placards that won't fade or peel like decals.

The sale at the Flying Mule brings us our opening plane picks this week. First up is the Hobby Master 1:48 scale Focke-Wulf Fw 190A Luftwaffe, Doppelreiter Testbed for $28.99.

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/HM-HA7407_01_lrg.jpg

Fw-190-A-7 W.Nr380394 was the test aircraft for an attempt to reduce drag caused by center-line fuel tanks thereby increasing airspeed. The experiment was called "Doppelreiter" (Double Rider) and involved placing a streamlined fuel tank on top of each wing which meant reducing the armament to two 151/20 E cannons. Each tank was droppable and carried 270 liters of fuel giving the aircraft an extended range. The over the wing tanks reduced the aircraft speed by 13 kph while the standard center-line tank reduced speed by 33 kph. Even though these were positive results the RLM did not accept the modification because they didn't want to disturb regular production schedules.

Also found in the Mule's hanger this week is the 1:72 scale Gaincorp Sukhoi Su-30KN Flanker Sukhoi Design Bureau, Factory Demonstrator 302, Zhukovskiy AB, Russia, 2001 for $29.99.

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/pge_spc.gifhttp://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/GC-8030_01_lrg.jpgFollowing the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia needed to find a lower-cost alternative to the Su-35 and Su-37 designs. The Su-30KN was a proposed mid-life upgrade to expand and enhance the air-to-ground capabilities of the existing fleet of Su-30 airframes. Costs were contained by focusing development efforts on avionics advancements and avoiding modifications to the airframe and power plant systems. An Su-30 was converted into the Su-30KN prototype and first flew in March 1999. This aircraft was repainted in a striking three-tone gray camouflage scheme and was coded "White 302".

Designed as two-seat multi-role variant of the Su-27, the Su-30 was first flown (as the Su-27PU) on December 31, 1989. The design grew from a Soviet need for a long-range interceptor based on the Su-27 with the addition of a second pilot and retractable in-flight refueling probe. Similar to the F-15E Strike Eagle, the Su-30 is still a highly capable Air Superiority Fighter while an advanced avionics suite make it formidable in the Air-to-Ground Strike Fighter role. The Su-30 has spawned numerous sub-variants, including several designed for the export market.

Gaincorp’s 1:72 scale Su-30 is a large, heavy model made primarily of diecast metal with plastic used only in those areas requiring the finest detail. The model can be easily displayed right out of the box without any configuration necessary. The speed brake with a positionable actuator support arm can be displayed in the deployed position behind the opening hinged canopy. Along with movable rudders and flaps, the forward leading edge slats are also movable, an uncommon feature in this scale. The model rests on sturdy metal fixed landing gear and is packed with a full load of wing and fuselage mounted ordnance.

The Gaincorp "World Aircraft Collection" range presents detailed, ready-made diecast models of military aircraft.

Chasing the Russian bird is the Dragon 1:72 scale F/A-18E VFA-27 "Royal Maces" from 3000Toys for $19.95.

http://www.3000toys.com/images/DRAGON/50314.jpg

VFA-27, or Strike Fighter Squadron 27, is a U.S. Navy fighter squadron that flies the F/A-18E Super Hornet. The unit is also known by its nickname “Royal Maces”, the mace being a medieval handheld weapon designed to pierce heavy armor. Such weapons were used by royal bodyguards in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and they came to symbolize authority and the rule of law and order. VFA-27’s F/A-18 Hornets participated in Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001 flying against Al Qaeda and the Taliban, and it also saw extensive combat in 2003 during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The squadron departed the USS Kitty Hawk in May 2004 in order to begin transitioning to the F/A-18E Super Hornet. This they duly completed at NAS Leemore in October of the same year.
Dragon Warbirds has a beautiful 1/72 scale model of an F/A-18E from VFA-27 “Royal Maces” available for collectors. It is done up in the colorful black and yellow markings of the CAG on the upper half of the fuselage. Detail on this miniature is exemplary, with panel lines cleanly and finely molded. The distinctive markings of the CAG are expertly rendered, including the “NF” tail code, a hand bearing the royal mace, and the characteristic saw-tooth markings on the tail rudder. Apparently, the first officer to introduce these saw-tooth markings painted them on a plane and then afterwards sought his commander’s approval. After being told to remove them and not to paint the planes without permission again, the commander then proceeded to order that they be repainted back on! This Dragon Warbirds F/A-18F is outstanding in quality, and it will make a high-impact presence in any aircraft collection.

Our final pick this week is the Dragon 1:144 scale Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress Display Model USAAF 303rd BG, 358th BS, "Silver Lady", 1945 from The Flying Mule for $23.99.

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/DM-51004_01_lrg.jpg

The four-engine B-17 Flying Fortress was used primarily in the WWII daylight precision bombing campaign against Germany. It was also used to a lesser extent in the Pacific theater. Such was the design's success that it dropped more bombs than any other American plane in WWII. The definitive version of the Flying Fortress introduced on production lines in July 1943 was the B-17G, with a total of 8680 eventually being manufactured. Dragon Warbirds has previously released a popular B-17F model, but it is now offering the first ever B-17G. One of the primary differences was that the B-17G featured the power-operated Bendix chin-type turret with twin .50-cal MGs under the nose, while other gun station locations around the fuselage were finalized. With 13 M2 .50-cal MGs, the B-17G was literally bulging with weapons – two cheek guns, two chin guns, two in the dorsal turret, two in the ventral turret, two in the waist, two in the tail, and one in the roof at the radio operator's position.

This 1:144 scale model is finely produced with excellent levels of detail. All the weapon stations are correctly rendered, and it bears the natural metal finish found on B-17G craft. The model is based on "The Silver Lady" as it appeared in March 1945, an aircraft operated by the 358th Bombardment Squadron. This was one of four squadrons in the 303rd Bomb Group operating from England, itself part of the 8th Air Force. The markings on this bomber are superbly reproduced, including the 303rd BG's large triangle with an inset "C" on the tail, which looks authentically scuffed and chipped. "The Silver Lady" has been masterfully executed in miniature, and collectors seeking the definitive B-17G will be pleased with its arrival. Please note: Unlike other models in the Dragon Warbirds 1:144 series, this model is made from a combination of diecast metal and plastic components.

Designed to meet a US Army Air Corps requirement for a multi-engined bomber to replace the B-10, the B-17 first flew on July 18, 1935. Best known for its role in the US Army Air Forces' daylight strategic bombing campaign during World War II, the B-17 could fly high and had a long range, and was capable of defending itself from enemy fighters. It was also tough, withstanding extensive battle damage, and was capable of carrying a 6,000 lb bombload. The B-17 became one of the symbols of Allied air power, equipping 32 overseas combat groups and dropping a total of 580,631 metric tons of bombs on European targets.

The Dragon Models "Dragon Wings 1:144 Warbirds Series" range presents highly-detailed, ready-made plastic models of military aircaft. While these models may lack the heft of their metal counterparts, the painting and markings are applied with the same precision as other Warbirds, making them pefectly at home in any diecast collection.

Dragon Models "Dragon Wings 1:144 Warbirds Series" display model airplanes feature:

Molded plastic construction.
Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details.

Our next pick is the early war Hobby Master 1:48 scale Brewster Model 339-23 "Buffalo" No. 25 Squadron RAAF, Sgt. John Bailey--West Australia 1942 from Fantastic Flyers for $34.97.

http://www.fantasticflyers.com/images/HA7008.jpg (http://javascript<b></b>:;)

Each model Features:

Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details.
Pad printed markings and placards that won't fade or peel like decals.
Interchangeable landing gear.
Presentation stand to display the aircraft "in flight".
Authentic detachable ordnance.
Opened canopies.
Heavy metal with a minimum of plastic.
About this Model:
The Brewster F2A Buffalo was USN's first mono-wing fighter. The status of the "Buffalo" is somewhat controversial in the history of aviation.

Replicating a B-339-23 Buffalo - intended for use by the Dutch Air Force in the East Indies but delivered to Australia when the original destination fell to the Japanese - flown by Flight Sgt. John Bailey of No. 25 Squadron, RAAF, stationed at RAAF Base Pearce, West Australia, in 1942, this limited edition, 1/48 scale die cast Hobby Master model has it all!
You get a detailed cockpit with instruments, flight controls, a ventral window and a sliding canopy; a movable rudder; removable 100-lb. wing-mounted bombs; retractable landing gear with rolling wheels and rubber tires; an authentic paint scheme; and more. 8¾" wingspan; includes a display stand.

The Battle of the Coral Sea and the fight at Guadalcanal in 1942 ended the Japanese drive across the Southwestern Pacific, but Japanese troops still controlled the northern half of New Guinea. Before General Douglas MacArthur could begin his drive to liberate the Philippines, he had to defeat the enemy forces in New Guinea and eliminate the Japanese sea and air forces at Rabaul, New Britain, threatening his flank and the supply lines. Rough terrain, terrible weather, and tropical diseases made it almost impossible for Allied ground troops to march across New Guinea, although airlifting troops with C-47s provided one solution. However, control of the skies had to be won before unarmed C-47s and amphibious forces could operate effectively. MacArthur entrusted the air war to General George C. Kenny, who commanded the Allied air forces in the Southwest Pacific, including the USAAf Fifth and Thirteenth Air Forces. Kenney convinced MacArthur that the first priority should be to destroy the enemy's "air strength until we own the air over New Guinea." Then, MacArthur's land and amphibious forces could advance under the constant protection of Allied fighters and bombers. The 7th Pursuit Squadron was activated on 15 July, 1941, designated the 7th Fighter Squadron in 1942, and assigned to the 49th Fighter Group. Originally based at Selfridge Field, Michigan, the squadron moved to Melbourne, Australia, early in 1942. Its pilots shot down 5 enemy aircraft in its first aerial action over Horn Island. The squadron's bases followed America's march north from the Solomon Islands as it was based in New Guinea and the Philippines. Pilots from the 7th flew the hottest aircraft in the Army Air Forces including the P-35,P-40, P-47,P-38, and P-51. Today the squadron is designated the 7th Combat Training Squadron, providing qualification training for F-117A stealth fighter pilots. This distinctive aircraft was flown by Lt. Clyde V.Kinsley who added the inscription 'Typhoon McGoon' on the left and right hand side of the nose.

Curtiss P-40E Warhawk (http://www.flyingmule.com/powersearch/?Search=CAT_TYP_PRP_FTR_P40)

Designed to meet a USAAC requirement for a pursuit aircraft, the P-40 Warhawk was first flown on October 14th, 1938. This aircraft was tough, virtually trouble-free and saw continual improvements to arms, armor and engines. The P-40 served in numerous combat areas; often outclassed by its adversaries in speed, maneuverability and rate of climb, it earned a reputation for extreme ruggedness. Its strong construction, heavy firepower, and ability to dive enabled it to compete with enemy fighters, and it was a formidable ground-attack aircraft. P-40s were also flown by the famed Flying Tigers against the Japanese in China.
