2012 Die Cast Buys of the Week

We will start our seventh year of featuring certain, mostly military, die cast items each week. During 2011 we posted 243 selections, including a few items which appeared more than once (generally from a different vendor) over the year. Those selections came from over 80 different vendors. Our mission is to provide an independent voice--highlighting some of the best values each week to the military die cast collector.

It is probably true that such an effort can never be completely objective. What we like, may not be exactly what you like, in terms of model type, scale, quality, manufacturer or other factors. That said; we try to include selections for both the most serious and budget minded collectors. We have certain dealers who have established outstanding reputations for product, prices and customer service. So these vendors probably receive more views than some others in the process of making our selections each week. Some dealers are outstanding in most respects--and may even have the very best customer service, but tend to have higher prices and few, if any, reduced price sales. As a result, their products tend to be recommended less than those with good products and outstanding prices, even if their customer service is of a lower quality.

There are currently two vendors who we will not consider for inclusion. The first of these we have never featured, due to poor customer service and relations experienced with him. The newest culled from our list is a company whose owner or part owner (directly or through entities) was shown through reliable and public reports and sources to have not once--but twice used credit card fraud in attempts to steal money from a well known international celebrity. If you are interested, this celebrity is way above the Kim, Kourtney and Snooki tier.

It has not escaped notice that we have again lost a number of vendors in 2011. Further many other vendors, it appears, have continued to reduce stock or even eliminate their military items that we feature here. In this adverse economic environment we are proud to say that we featured significantly more vendors in 2011 than we did in the prior two years. It's unclear whether we can exceed or even match those accomplishments in another year of this bad economy, but we will try.

We use the term "die cast" somewhat liberally, as we feature not only traditional die cast items, but also resin, wood and mostly plastic items as well. The keys are that each featured item come pre-painted and requires either little or no assembly.

Stay tuned for our first selections for 2012. They will appear very soon. Before they do, we are taking a short break so that you can check out our 2011 Die Cast Buys of the Year, which were just posted and are inspired--or are pure encore presentations--from our 52 installments in our 2011 Die Cast Buys of the week.

Almost as affordable in these lean weeks after Christmas is the Porsche Sd.Kfz.182 King Tiger German Army sPzAbt 501, #124, Normandy, France, July 1944 for $9.99 at The Flying Mule.

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/DM-60106_01_lrg.jpg

The King Tiger, Germany's most formidable Heavy Tank, made its first appearance on the WWII theater in 1944. The first 50 tanks produced had Porsche turrets whereas subsequent tanks were equipped with the Henschel designed production turret. The King Tiger was armed with a 71-caliber 88mm gun that had enough power to penetrate 150mm thick armor from 2000m away. For protection, the chassis front armor was 150mm thick with 80mm thick side armor.

Officially designated Panzerkampfwagen VI Sd.Kfz 182, the King Tiger entered service in 1944. This tank carried the awesome tank-killing 88mm main gun and had four-inch armor at its thickest. The system was crewed by five personnel and two machine guns were added for self-defense. The King Tiger's ability to destroy enemy tanks at extreme ranges yet remain impervious to those same tanks made it more than a match for any Allied tank. The sight of a King Tiger on the battlefield was terrifying and did great morale damage to Allied forces.

Dragon's 1:72 scale King Tigers replicate many fine features such as intricate radiator vents, crew hatches and periscope details on the turret and front of hull. Each release features a 360-degree rotating turret and elevating cannon with hollowed muzzle break. Each of the 18 road wheels includes bolt head details that can clearly be seen through the vehicle’s tracks, while access panels and torsion bar suspension are reproduced on the model's underside. The series includes the distinctively streamlined early "Porsche" turret and the shell-deflecting, late production "Henschel" design. Some releases also feature a simulated Zimmerit coating on the turret and hull.

The Dragon Models "1:72 Dragon Armor Collector Series" range presents highly-detailed, ready-made plastic models of military vehicles. Dragon Armor tanks require no gluing or painting. Each model is an instant display piece or diorama centerpiece straight from the box and is 100% true to scale... these don't look like model tanks, they look like tanks!. Color, camouflage and unit markings are carefully researched for maximum authenticity, marking the difference between and authentic scale model tank and a "toy" tank.

Dragon Models "1:72 Dragon Armor Collector Series" display model vehicles feature:
  • Molded plastic construction (some releases include diecast metal components).
  • Rotating turret, elevating cannon and accurate hull.
  • Painted, fitted, non-moving tracks and detailed non-rotating wheels.
  • Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details.
  • Pad printed markings and placards that won't fade or peel like decals.
  • Clear acrylic display case to protect model.

Inspired by the play of Tim Tebow our winning aerial show this week opens with the Corgi 1:32 scale U.S. P51D Mustang - 'Jersey Jerk' from Wartoyz for $97.99.

http://www.wartoyz.com/Merchant2/gra...ustang-450.jpg

Many people consider the P-51 Mustang the best fighter of WWII. Its combination of speed, range, maneuverability, and firepower gave it great versatility. Its use in all major theaters of the war included long range, high altitude escort of Bombers, close air support for ground troops, and photo reconnaissance.

This die cast 1:32 scale version of the U.S. P-51D Mustang depicts the 'Jersey Jerk' aircraft flown by Major Don Strait, Commanding Officer of the 361st Fighter Squadron, 356th Fighter Group stationed at Martlesham Heath in England, as it was seen in December of 1944. Strait was the Group's highest scoring ace with 13.5 kills.

This Highly Limited Edition 1:32 scale U.S. P-51D Mustang is part of Corgi's Aviation Archive Deluxe series, and it is approximately twelve inches long with a wingspan of approximately fourteen inches. This special fully working model has realistic aircraft sound, a working propeller, illuminated navigation lights, realistic cockpit controls on the display stand, and an operating undercarriage. It is part of a Highly Limited Edition of only 1600 worldwide!

This item has been 'retired' by Corgi, and will no longer be available once our current inventory sells out. Order now to avoid missing out on this best seller!

We begin this week with the excellent and difficult to find TAMIYA
1:48 scale German Tank Destroyer, Hetzer Mid Production Training Unit, Finished Model, #26504 from the Mark Twain Hobby Center for just $24.95.

http://images.nitrosell.com/product_...1/tam26504.jpg

In 1943 the German high command ordered development of a new light tank destroyer to replace vehicles like the StuG III and Marder. Prototypes of the Hetzer, which shared many components of the Panzerkampfwagen 38(t), were ready by 1944 and mass production began in April of the same year, with 2,584 vehicles produced by May, 1945. Manned by a crew of 4, it featured a 75mm Pak 39 L/48 gun in fixed mounting, and sloped armor covering the entire hull. The Hetzer was continually modified during production, which accounts for the many differences between early, mid and later production models. The Hetzer was Germany's main tank destroyer in the latter period of the war, and made an important contribution on both the Eastern and Western fronts.

Features:

Fully assembled 1/48 scale Tank Destroyer Hetzer, professionally painted with all markings pre-applied.

Die-cast chassis provides added weight and realism.

Highly-detailed suspension features tank treads with realistic sag effect.

Dark Yellow base color scheme and markings feature ultra-realistic weathering.

Last but not least we feature the 1:144 scale Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series US33508 Boeing B-52H Stratofortress Diecast Model
USAF SAC 7th BW, 9th BS, Carswell AFB, TX, March 1990 from the Flying Mule's Winter Sale for $59.99.

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/pge_spc.gifhttp://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/CG-US33508_01_lrg.jpgThe 7th BW's B-52s wore a tail stripe on which was superimposed the skull of the Texas Longhorn. Its two squadrons were primarily assigned to the strategic strike role, using the AGM-86 ALCM.

Designed to meet an Air Materiel Command requirement for a long-range, strategic bomber, the B-52 Stratofortress was first flown on April 15, 1952. First envisioned as a straight wing, six turboprop aircraft, the B-52 underwent a number of design changes before becoming the swept-wing, eight turbojet aircraft it is today. Originally built for Cold War era "deterrence" missions, this aircraft is capable of carrying nuclear weapons but in actual combat has only dropped conventional munitions. Its long service career has included Vietnam, the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan and Iraq, and it is expected to continue serving until at least 2040.

Corgi's 1:144 scale B-52s are surprisingly large and heavy, weighing in at almost three pounds. Each model includes a heavily constructed all metal display-stand for in-flight display. The series includes most production variants, from early versions with large tail fins and pivoting tail machine gun turrets to the later B-52H, with its clipped tail fin and 20mm Vulcan cannons. The engine nacelles contain both intake and exhaust details, and the cockpit windscreen is masterfully integrated. The center landing gear is keyed to provide easy configuration for ground display with a set of wing tip gear for balance.

The Corgi "Aviation Archive" range presents highly-detailed, ready-made diecast models of military and civilian aircraft. The vast Aviation Archive range has become the standard by which all other diecast airplane ranges are judged. Each Corgi model is based on a specific aircraft from an important historical or modern era of flight, and has been authentically detailed from original documents and archival library material. Famous airplanes and aviators from both military and commercial airline aviation are all honored. Corgi "Aviation Archive" diecast airplanes feature:
  • Diecast metal construction with some plastic components.
  • Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details.
  • Pad printed markings and placards that won't fade or peel like decals.
  • Interchangeable extended/retracted landing gear with rotating wheels.
  • Poseable presentation stand to display the aircraft "in flight".
  • Many limited editions with numbered certificate of authenticity.
  • Detailed, hand-painted pilot and crew member figures.
  • Authentic detachable ordnance loads complete with placards.
  • Selected interchangeable features such as speed-brakes, opened canopies and access panels.
  • Selected moving parts such as gun turrets, control surfaces and swing-wings.

The M4 Sherman, formally Medium Tank, M4, was the primary tank used by the United States during World War II. Thousands were also distributed to the Allies, including the British Commonwealth and Soviet armies, via lend-lease. In the United Kingdom, the M4 was named after Union General William Tecumseh Sherman, following the British practice of naming their American-built tanks after famous American Civil War generals. Subsequently the British name found its way into common use in the U.S.

Next up is the Tamiya 1:48 scale Russian Heavy Tank KV-2 - Finished Item #26527 from the Tamiya site for $43.50.

http://www.micromacromundo.com/tamiyal/ta26527.jpg

About the KV-2
Weighing in at more than 50 tons, the monstrous KV-2 was designed to be an assault tank that would support advancing infantry. Housed in its massive turret was a 152mm main gun that could take out enemy defensive emplacements like bunkers. Its thick armor was also immune to attacks from most anti-tank guns of the period. While the design looked formidable on paper, an underpowered engine, unreliable mechanics, and poor mobility limited its effectiveness in battle. Nonetheless, it played a role in the defense of Russia during the initial stages of war on the Eastern Front, and helped hold the line until more modern tanks could be developed.

About the Model:

Replica-quality 1/48 scale finished display model of the KV-2.
Intimidating form of the heavy tank, including the massive turret, is accurately reproduced.
Professionally-applied washing technique with light weathering effects give the tank a realistic appearance.
Unique pad-printed markings distinguish this finished model from the assembly kit version.
Die-cast chassis provides added weight to match the tanks formidable presence.
Special numbered display base with nameplate is included.
Line it up with other 1/48MM Russian AFVs or display it with its former German adversaries.

For the Week of February 26, 2012

This last week was marked by some unplanned and unintended juggling by a family member. It did not end well. Fortunately it was at the beginner's level and involved only 3 planes that were never designed to fly. To take my mine off that event, let's go to our first selection for this week.

Our first of things that belong on the ground is the Forces of Valor 1:32 scale U.S. 6x6 1.5 Ton Cargo Truck from Wartoyz for $37.99.

http://www.wartoyz.com/Merchant2/gra...-truck-450.jpg

This die cast 1:32 scale version of the U.S. 6x6 1.5 Ton Cargo Truck depicts the vehicle as seen in the European Theater during 1945.

This U.S. 1.5 Ton Cargo Truck is part of Forces Of Valor's Enthusiast Edition series, which is the extremely detailed version of this vehicle.

The 1:32 scale die cast metal vehicle is approximately 8 inches long and has wheels that roll.

This special Signature Edition die-cast 1:48 scale U.S. P-51 Mustang is part of the Air Power Series from Hobby Master. It depicts the famous 'Old Crow' P-51D Mustang flown by 16.25 victory ace Col. Also from Dragon in the 1:72 scale for the budget minded collector is the HMMWV M1025, LSA Anaconda 2004 Operation Iraqi Freedom w/Armor Survivability Kit from Model Warehouse for $8.95.

http://www.prestoimages.com/store/rd...d1922609_1.jpg

This model represents a HMMWV from Task Force 1-177 that operated from LSA Anaconda (Camp Anaconda) during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004. It includes fully detailed Add-on Armor Panels and diecast chassis.

Main Features:
- Includes detailed Add-on armor panels
- Diecast chassis
- Detailed front and rear lights and license plate
- Includes display case with diorama background

- Fully accurate HMMWV mold

About Camp Anaconda:
LSA Anaconda, the largest support base in Iraq, is reportedly nicknamed "Mortaritaville" because of the frequency of mortar/rocket attacks on the base. As of mid-October 2004, an article in the Seattle Times reported, the facility, home to roughly 22,500 US troops and an additional 2,500 contractors, had been on the receiving end of roughly two attacks daily since July.

About the M1025:
The M1025 armament carriers provide mounting and firing of the MK19 automatic grenade launcher; M2, caliber .50 machine gun; and M60, 7.62 mm machine gun; ring-mounted with 360° arc of fire, with armor protection for crew, weapon components, and ammunition.

Fully-loaded M1025 armament carriers will climb road grades as steep as 60% (31°) and traverse a side slope of up to 40% (22°). The vehicles ford hard bottom water crossings up to 30 inches (76 centimeters) without a deep water fording kit and 60 inches (152 centimeters) with the kit.

As of late June 2004, the majority of the airfield's pre-existing bunkers have been abandoned by the US military. Facility Engineer Team 21 out of Ft Devens is the Department of Public Works for the base camp. As of September 2003 the Team was working on a Master Plan for the base, which may get as big as 20,000 soldiers. As of May 2004 the base had 17,000 troops and was 12 1/2 miles in circumference.

The Luftwaffe had never intended to operate in North Africa, however the largely ineffective Regia Aeronautica led to the deployment of large numbers of German Aircraft. The desert proved to be the perfect arena for aerial combat and the beautiful Bf 109 'Friedrich' excelled in these harsh conditions and quickly became the scourge of Allied airmen.

This aircraft is presented in the standard Luftwaffe finish for the Western Desert. Neumann rose to command JG27 and survived the war, with 13 aerial combat victories to his name.

This Tiger I was emblazoned with the battalion logo of a charging knight on its turret.

The Forces of Valor 2011 Limited Edition Extreme Metal Tiger I possesses an incredible array of detailing on the tank. Beginning with the real metal tracks and continuing with working tank suspension, exquisite sculpting, casting and painting detail, and including many removable elements and tools. The engine compartment is accessible and the detailed engine will be removable and can be displayed separately.

This 1:16 scale Tiger 1 tank is approximately 16 inches long (22 inches including the gun barrel) and 9 inches wide. It includes a scale figure of the tank commander.

We get high with medical die cast from Aim Higher Jets and the 1:144 scale Century Wings F-14A Tomcat USN VF-41 Black Aces, AJ100, USS Nimitz, 1978 for $20.00.

http://a248.e.akamai.net/origin-cdn....CW589728-1.jpg

The Century Wings line of models are probably the MOST accurately replicated F-14A model ever made. They are now expanding this line to the 1/144 scale collectible line. The F-14 is a 1/144 scale model of VF-41 of the Black Aces squadron. Tail number is AJ100.

Don't let the smaller size fool you, Century Wings has included every detail from the gun turret to the sheet metal panels are accurately depicted on the jet. This particular model depicts the aircraft in the normal flying configuration with gear extended. Additionally, the model comes with a beautiful display stand. Production is limited to 2,000 units worldwide with US Retailers receiving a significantly smaller portion of the total models.

The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat, variable geometry wing aircraft. The F-14 was the United States Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter, fleet defense interceptor and tactical reconnaissance platform from 1972 to 2006. It later performed precision strike missions once it was integrated with LANTIRN. It was developed after the collapse of the F-111B project, and was the first of the American teen-series fighters which were designed incorporating the experience of air combat in Vietnam against MIGs.

It entered service in 1972 with the U.S. Navy, replacing the F-4 Phantom II. It was later exported to the Imperial Iranian Air Force in 1976. It was retired from the U.S. Navy fleet on 22 September 2006, having been replaced by the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. As of 2007, it remains in service only with the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force.

Trying to capture another one is the Dragon 1:35 scale Tiger I Late Production w/Zimmerit s.Pz.Abt.508, Italy 1944 for $49.95 from J-P Hobbies.

http://www.j-p-hobbies.com/prodimages/dml_61021.jpg

Features:
- Open window display packaging
- Highly popular and collectible item
- True to 1/35 scale
- Fully accurate mold
- Fully assembled
- Includes protective display case

Schwere Panzer Abteilung (s.Pz.Abt.) 508 was formed in August 1943, and was initially equipped with the formidable Tiger I tank. With an inventory of 45 Tiger Is, the unit was ordered to counterattack the Allied bridgehead at Anzio between December 1943 and January 1944. The Tigers had to road march 200km from a railhead, and 60% of tanks broke down on the narrow, winding mountain roads on the way to Anzio. In any event, the massed Tigers of s.Pz.Abt. 508, plus Panthers and Elefants from other units, were repulsed mainly by naval gunfire. During the Italian campaign, the unit received 32 further Tiger I tanks up till June 1944 to make up combat losses. Finally, s.Pz.Abt. 508 turned in its 15 remaining Tigers to s.Pz.Abt. 504 in February 1945 before returning to Germany to train on the Kingtiger.

Dragon Armor has produced a fine 1/35 scale model of a Tiger I from this famous unit. The fully assembled and finished model is a Late Production variant of a tank fighting in Italy in 1944. A notable aspect of this model is the Zimmerit coating reproduced in exacting detail, this item (2008 release) being the first 1/35 Tiger I with Zimmerit in the Dragon Armor range. To enable the depiction of Zimmerit, a completely new turret, upper and lower hull were produced. The Zimmerit is expertly crafted, representing as good a finish as only skillful modelers could achieve. The model is finished in an overall three-color camouflage finish, and this has been carefully painted onto the vehicle, which is itself an accurately dimensioned and detailed replica of the original tank. This Zimmerit coating adds a new look to an already popular tank, and contributes to an aggressive and attractive subject from the Italian theater.

About the Challenger II Tank (MBT-Main Battle Tank):The FV4034 Challenger II is the main battle tank (MBT) currently in service with the armies of the United Kingdom and Oman. Built by the British company, Vickers Defense Systems (now part of BAESystemsLand and Armaments). The manufacturer advertises it as the world's most reliable main battle tank, although military operations in desert conditions have exposed significant problems which had to be addressed. As of January 2008, two Challenger II’s have been damaged and one destroyed (by a friendly fire engagement by another Challenger II) in combat. The Challenger II is an extensive redesign from Challenger I, the MBT from which it was developed. It uses the basic hull and automotive parts of its predecessor, but all else is new. Fewer than 5% of components are interchangeable.

The Challenger II has now replaced Challenger I in service with the British Army and is also used by the Royal Army of Oman. The UK placed orders for 127 Challenger II tanks in 1991 and an additional 259 in 1994. Oman ordered 18 of the tanks in 1993 and a further 20 in November 1997. The Challenger II entered service with the British Army in 1998, with the last delivered in 2002. It is expected to remain in service until 2035. Deliveries for Oman were completed in 2001. The Challenger II has seen operational service in Bosnia, Kosovo-Serbia and Iraq (2003–present).

In 1952, While aboard the USS Bataan during the Korean War, VMA-312 "Checkerboards" pilot Capt. Jesse Folmar became the first American to shoot down a jet fighter with a propeller-driven aircraft. On September 10,1952, Captain Folmar was able to down one of a pair of MIG-15s that attacked him and his wingman, but was himself shot down when attacked by four other MIGs Capt. Folmar parachuted safely into the water and was rescued shortly thereafter.

The F4U Corsair was a carrier-capable fighter aircraft that saw service primarily in World War II and the Korean War. It paired a lightweight fuselage with a powerful engine and large propeller. The Corsair served in smaller air forces until the 1960's, following the longest production run of any piston-engined fighter in US history (1942–1952).

The Corgi Aviation Archive features a wide selection of high quality, ready-made, diecast model airplanes. Each model is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, using specifications of the original aircraft. Corgi models are built with diecast metal and some plastic components.

The models in the Corgi Aviation Archive series feature: realistic panel lines, a detailed cockpit with pilot figure, historically accurate aircraft markings and landing gear with rubber tires. They can be displayed with the landing gear down or 'in flight' on the included stand.

Flying in from the Flying Mule's Memorial Day Sale is the Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series US37404 1:72 (6.75" x 4.75") scale Douglas A-4E Skyhawk Diecast Model--USN VA-46 Clansman, AA416, John McCain, USS Forestall, Gulf of Tonkin, 1967 for $24.95.

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/pge_spc.gif

This aircraft was one of 21 jets destroyed during a huge fire that engulfed the flight deck of the USS Forestall on the morning of 29 July 1967 as the carrier prepared to launch its second strike of the day against targets in North Vietnam. The vessel, with Carrier Air Wing 17 embarked, had only been in the theater on Yankee Station for 48 hours when disaster struck. A Zuni unguided rocket was accidentally fired from an F-4J Phantom II, hitting an A-4 (possibly this aircraft) parked in front of it. Strapped into the cockpit of 'AA416' was Lt. Cdr. John S. McCain, who quickly abandoned his jet and ran for cover. Of the 21 jets destroyed in the ensuing conflagration, 11 of them were A-4Es. By the time the blaze aboard the Forestall had been brought under control some 12 hours after it had started, 134 sailors were dead and $72 Million worth of damage had been inflicted on the US Navy's first Super Carrier.

Douglas A-4E Skyhawk

Designed to replace the antiquated, propeller-driven AD Skyraider, the A-4 Skyhawk was first flown on June 22, 1954. Douglas exceeded the original design requirements by delivering a carrier-capable aircraft that was only half the Navy's weight specification and so compact that it did not need folding wings. The A-4 was the first to use "buddy" air-to-air refueling (an A-4 could refuel other aircraft of the same type), which was helpful when operating in remote locations where dedicated tankers were impractical. The A-4 served the US Navy until 2003 and remained the preferred warplane for the Marine Corps until the 1980s, even after the introduction of the A-7 Corsair II.

Corgi's 1:72 scale Skyhawk series includes the early "E" variant as well as the "F" and "M" variants, which feature a hump on top the fuselage spine to house the upgraded avionics package. The models in this series are surprisingly heavy, constructed almost entirely of diecast metal with only the smallest amount of plastic. Each release features a pair of 20mm cannons, a delicate refueling probe and a variety of wing-mounted weapons ordnance and fuel tanks. This sturdy little model includes a pilot figure and easily configurable landing gear for ground or in-flight display.

About the Stuka:
Early in WWII, the German Ju-87 Stuka dive bombers struck fear into the hearts of its prey, and they were a powerful symbol of the new style of blitzkrieg warfare. However, as the war progressed, the Stuka was found to be vulnerable, and so other uses were found for it. One of these was as an airborne tank killer, with the Ju-87G being the final version of this distinctive and ungainly looking aircraft.

The world's most famous Trainer/COIN aircraft was used by over 55 countries. The T-6 was built in greater numbers than most of the aircraft that it trained pilots for, or against. Over 17,000 Texan aircraft were manufactured by North American and other companies. Designed as a Basic Trainer, the T-6 would be used as a Advanced Trainer, Fighter, Interceptor, Fighter-Bomber, Forward Air Controller, and Counter-insurgency aircraft. The Texan saw action in WWII, Korea and Vietnam, and in dozens of Brush fire wars around the world including Algeria, the Congo, Biafra, the Middle East and throughout Latin America. For the Week of July 8, 2012

We hope that all those in the USA had a great 4th of July that included some time and thought beyond the fireworks, dogs, burgers, brats and beer with regard to why it is a national holiday.

Our first post 4th selection is the 1:32 scale Unimax Forces of Valor 81016
Krupp Sd.Kfz.142 early grau StuG III--German Army from The Flying Mule's Summer Sale for only $33.95.

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/pge_spc.gif
The most produced German armored vehicle of WW2, the "Stug III" was built on a Panzer tank chassis. Originally, this assault gun was created to support infantry maneuvers, but it was continually modified during the war and eventually found its most notable role in that of a tank destroyer.

Originally designed as a mobile, light gun to provide close infantry support, the StuG III first entered service in 1940. Early models were armed with a modest, low-velocity 75mm StuK 37 L/24 gun, but by the Spring of 1942 the Germans had modified the StuG III with a higher velocity StuK 40 L/43 gun so that it was a better match for Soviet KV-1 and T-34 tanks. The new configuration quickly proved to be an exceptionally effective tank destroyer--cost effective, easily camouflaged and difficult to target. By the spring of 1944, StuG IIIs were responsible for destroying some 20,000 Allied tanks.

The Unimax "Forces of Valor" range presents affordable, ready-made diecast models of military vehicles. Unimax "Forces of Valor" diecast vehicles feature:
  • Diecast metal construction with some plastic components.
  • Rotating turret, elevating cannon and accurate hull.
  • Moving tracks on detailed rotating wheels.
  • Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details.
  • Pad printed markings and placards that won't fade or peel like decals.

Not to be out done, The Flying mule sale counters with the Corgi 1:72 scale Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series US36109 Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina Diecast Model USAAF, John S. McCain, Henderson Field, Guadalcanal Island, August 1942 for just $59.95.

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/pge_spc.gifhttp://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/CG-US36109_01_lrg.jpg

Commanding all US Navy, Marine Corps and USAA aircraft in the South Pacific area, Vice Admiral John S. McCain (grandfather of Senator John S. McCain III) was a capable leader at a crucial time in the Pacific War. He used this PBY-5A as his command flagship, and had it fly critical supplies into Henderson Field just five days after the Marines had first gone ashore on Guadalcanal. It thus became the very first aircraft to land at this strategically critical airfield following its capture by US forces.

Designed to replace the Martin P3M, the PBY Catalina was first flown on March 28th, 1935. This aircraft is a long range patrol flying boat, one of the most rugged and versatile aircraft in U.S. history. Its long range assisted in the location and attack of enemy transport ships. A great advantage of flying boats is that they need no runway, however later PBY variants incorporated retractable landing gear, allowing for amphibious operation from land or water. Even today—more than seventy years after its first flight—the PBY continues to fly as an air tanker in firefighting operations throughout the world.

Corgi's 1:72 scale PBYs feature massive observation blister-windows located aft, with a variety of crew and machine gun configurations in each release. These windows provide a clear view of the bulkhead leading to the main cabin, walkway and hull construction ribs. There are articulating outrigger pontoons and a massive wing, with details such as simulated fabric-covered control surfaces. Transparent lens covers are separately applied to the large landing lights on each wing's leading edge. The series includes a flying boat variant, with detachable "beaching gear," as well as an amphibious variant which can be configured with extended or retracted landing gear.

The Corgi "Aviation Archive" range presents highly-detailed, ready-made diecast models of military and civilian aircraft. The vast Aviation Archive range has become the standard by which all other diecast airplane ranges are judged. She better not run into the German Tiger 1 from Wartoyz for $359.99. Guess she won't, as this one was sent to Poland.

http://www.wartoyz.com/Merchant2/gra...i-2011-450.jpg

In pursuit of greater firepower, the German Army created a series of heavy battle tanks. One of the most formidable was the Tiger Tank. With 100MM thick armor plating and an awesome 88MM gun, the Tiger was vastly superior to the Allied tanks it faced.

This special 1:16 scale 2011 Limited Edition version of the Tiger I recreates the Tiger I tank as it was seen in Poland in 1944. As part of Schwere Panzer Abteilung 505, this Tiger I was emblazoned with the battalion logo of a charging knight on its turret.

For the Week of July 22, 2012

Since we went big with the armor last week, both of our picks this week are dragon 1:72 scale pieces. In a way they are roughly the same tanks as last week. We start with the Sd. Kfz. 181 Tiger-I Mid Production, sPzAbt 508, March 1944 from OB's for $10.95.

Next up is our Sherman, but this one is Firefly--captured by the Germans. The Flying Mule has it for $10.95.

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/pge_spc.gifhttp://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/DM-60260_08_lrg.jpg

The pilot model of the M4 was completed in September 1941, and the Sherman became the most widely produced tank of the war. The M4 Sherman defeated heavier tanks with superior numbers, and by using outflanking tactics to strike thinner enemy flank armor. Shermans also achieved success with progressively upgunned models and by working with tank destroyers. The Sherman tank--named by the British--was fast, maneuverable, mechanically reliable, easy to manufacture, and effective in its infantry support role. It served with the US Army and Marines during World War II, and the US transferred large numbers to the United Kingdom and allied forces of many countries.

Dragon's 1:72 scale M4 Sherman is constructed almost entirely of diecast plastic, which provides for the greatest possible level of detailing. Featuring a 360-degree rotating turret with elevating cannon, this model has hatches, hinges, welded amour plating and a turret that are all stunningly accurate, and the same level of detailing has been applied to the vehicle's track system. The model's underside features forward crew escape hatch, engine compartment access panels and wheel suspension components. Additional detailing includes delicate guards that shield both head lamps and textured lenses and tail lights. Subtle airbrushed weathering with hand-painted tools and equipment add a finishing touch.

This beautifully presented Spitfire Mk. IX wears a very unusual color scheme, but doesn't she look a picture! Of particular note are the faded US national insignia, which are bordered by a fresh application of insignia blue. This model is a must for any Spitfire collection!

Meanwhile in the air, we have spotted the Corgi 1:72 scale P-40E Warhawk Model, USAAF, "Aleutian Tigers" - Corgi AA35205 - from Showcase Toys for $29.95.

http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/showcasetoys_2222_19425681

Curtiss P-40 E Warhawk - 11th FS "Aleutian Tigers", USAAF, Aleutian Islands, 1943

1:72 scale. Wingspan: 6.25" (15.9 cm)

Limited Edition

The P-40s of the 11th FS, 343rd FG were painted in a variation on the theme made famous by the American Volunteer Group (A.V.G., also known as Flying Tigers), and were known as the Aleutian Tigers. This version with a white spinner was one of the latest P-40 's to still be flying when attached to the 11th Fighter Squadron in 1943

The P-40's legacy will always be as the aircraft flown by Claire Chennault's American Volunteer Group (A.V.G or also known as the Flying Tigers). 100 P-40's (considered obsolete) were given to the Chinese in 1941. In approximately 6 months of combat the AVG officially destroyed 297 planes with another 153 probables. All of this was accomplished with the loss of only 12 P-40s

Spitfire PR Mk. XIX, No. 541 Squadron, Benson, 1944 (1:48) by Hobby Master Diecast Airplanes
Item Number: HA7601 The Spitfire PR XIX was the last Spitfire with elliptical wings and was the last RAF Spitfire type in front-line service. The PR XIX was a combination of power by the Griffon engine of the Mk. XIV and the wings of the PR XI making it the fastest Spitfire. Weapons were removed to allow for larger fuel tanks in the leading edge of the wings making it possible to fly missions as far as Berlin at altitudes over 40,000 feet. By the end of production 225 XIX had been made.

The 541 Squadron was formed in October 1942 at RAF Benson, Oxfordshire, England.
The squadron used Spitfire PR XIX to carry out reconnaissance missions over Europe until the end of WWII. By late 1944 the D-Day stripes were worn on the fuselage only.
No. 541 Squadron was disbanded on October 1, 1946 but reformed November 1, 1947.
Still using the PR XIX they flew photographic reconnaissance and survey missions. The squadron continued to use the PR XIX until December 1950 when they were replaced with Meteors.

For the Week of August 26, 2012

For our last time around in August, we feature two Dragon King Tigers but in different scales. We'll start with the 1:72 scale King Tiger (Henschel Turret) 1/sPzAbt 101, France 1944 w/Zimmerit coating from The Toy Federation for $9.95.

http://www.thetoyfederation.com/images/t_17838.jpg

1/72 Scale King Tiger (Henschel Turret) 1/sPzAbt 101, France 1944 w/Zimmerit coating
- Pre-injected Zimmerit coating
- Accurate markings and camouflage
- Highly detailed exhaust dischargers
- Elevating gun
- Realistic weathered track links

This 1/72 static die-cast model features a King Tiger mounted with a Henschel turret of the sPzAbt 101 in France in 1944.

Hail to the King:

http://www.thetoyfederation.com/prod...8&cat=0&page=2

Mislabeled as being 1:72 scale is the 1:35 scale King Tiger Henschel Turret w/Zimmerit, Western Front 1945 (DRR61011) from Aviation Supermart for $47.95.

http://www.dragonmodelsusa.com/dmlus...l_DRR61011.jpg

Weighing 69.8 tons, Germany's King Tiger tank entered production in mid-1944. It was an impressive vehicle, and being the final tank design to enter production during WWII, it could be seen as the pinnacle of German tank design. The King Tiger was armed with an 8.8cm KwK 43 L/71 gun and its frontal armor was up to 180mm thick. Such a formidable fighting machine had weaknesses though, since its heavy bulk and underpowered engine meant it wasn't as mobile as it should have been. Dragon Armor has launched its second fantastic fully built-up 1/35 scale model of a Tiger II. This Henschel production version of the King Tiger is based on a tank from 3./s.PzAbt 506 that fought on the Eastern Front in 1945.
Dragons 1/35 scale tank is distinctive with a full coat of Zimmerit on the hull and turret. This copy of the original antimagnetic mine paste has been carefully and realistically crafted and textured to scale. The camouflage scheme feature red-brown stripes over a yellow base, along with tactical markings painted over the Zimmerit in a most realistic manner. The designers and craftsmen responsible for this masterpiece have provided everything necessary to produce an accurate model. It even features delicately detailed engine mesh screens made from photo-etched metal. This King Tiger, a real striped big cat, is ready to spring into action!

The big cat awaits here:

The Medium Tank M3 was an American tank used during World War II era. This tank was called "General Lee" named after General Robert E. Lee. Produced in 1939, the M3 Lee was the first U.S. medium tank designed with a 75mm gun. The main weapon a lower-velocity 75 mm gun was in an offset sponson mounting in the hull, with consequent limited traverse. A small turret with a lighter, higher-velocity 37 mm gun was on the top of the tall hull. The M3 Lee served proudly from 1942-1943 before being replaced by the M4 Sherman.

Our final three selections are from the Flying Mule. On the ground, we give you the 1:32 scale Unimax Forces of Valor (80202) BAE Systems M2 Bradley Diecast Model US Army for $39.95.

The M3A2 Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) is the newest version of the fully tracked, lightly armored fighting vehicle that features many advances over previous variants. New fire control, communication, and identification systems give even more lethality to the mighty fighting vehicle.

The M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle is designed to be fast; it can reach a top speed of 40 miles per hour, can cross any terrain, and transitions to amphibious mode in five minutes. It is used to scout enemy positions and transport troops into hostile territory, while simultaneously providing fire cover to troops and suppressing enemy tanks. The M2 holds a crew of three: a commander, a gunner and a driver and seven fully-equipped soldiers. The 25 mm cannon fires up to 200 rounds per minute and is accurate up to 2500 meters.

Forces of Valor's 1:32 scale Bradley is intelligently designed; the top portion of the hull and turret are constructed in diecast metal, with plastic components used in those areas requiring maximum detail. Moving parts include a 360 degree rotating turret, opening crew hatches, rolling rubber tracks and wheels with active suspension and a rear door that can be lowered to reveal interior details. A 25mm chain gun with articulating aerial gun sight pivots in unison with a 7.63 machine gun, and the turret-mounted TOW missile system has an articulating front seal and can be raised to firing position. A variety of battlefield equipment is included for enhanced display.

The Unimax "Forces of Valor" range presents affordable, ready-made diecast models of military vehicles.

Unimax "Forces of Valor" diecast vehicles feature:
  • Diecast metal construction with some plastic components.
  • Rotating turret, elevating cannon and accurate hull.
  • Moving tracks on detailed rotating wheels.
  • Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details.
  • Pad printed markings and placards that won't fade or peel like decals.

From Fort Worth with come arrives the 1:144 scale Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series (US33508) Boeing B-52H Stratofortress Diecast Model USAF SAC 7th BW, 9th BS, Carswell AFB, TX, March 1990 for $59.95.

The 7th BW's B-52s wore a tail stripe on which was superimposed the skull of the Texas Longhorn.

Heading the coast is the 1:72 scale Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series (AA32017) Hawker Sea Hurricane Diecast Model FAA 880 NAS, Richard 'Dickie' Cork, Arbroath & St. Merryn, Scotland, 1941 for $19.95.

http://www.flyingmule.com/img/pge_spc.gifhttp://www.flyingmule.com/img/prd/CG-AA32017_01_lrg.jpg
The Royal Navy acquired Hurricanes to help in the Battle of the Atlantic which, in early 1940, had a steep rise in shipping losses far from shore, where land-based aircraft could not provide air cover for Allied convoys. This gave rise to the 'Hurricat', a converted Hurricane carried by CAM-ships. Hurricanes converted for such a role needed only the addition of catapult spools, and 50 Hurricane Mk I land-planes were so modified and designated Sea Hurricane Mk IA. The first of the Hurricanes and Sea Hurricanes to see service with the Fleet Air Arm arrived in February 1941 and were operating with front line unit 880 Squadron from 15 March 1941. Battle of Britain ace 'Dickie' Cork first flew W9220 on 7 April 1941 and continued to do so for several months. The Sea Hurricane Mk I were followed by about 300 Mk I's converted to Sea Hurricane Mk IB configuration, these having catapult spools plus a V-frame arrester hook: in addition 25 Mk IIA were modified as Sea Hurricane IB or Hooked Hurricane II fighters.

Based on the Fury biplane and designed by Sydney Camm as a monoplane fighter, the Hurricane was first flown on November 6th, 1935. With its wide-set landing gear, easy handling, reliability, and stable gun platform, the Hurricane was suitable for a variety of different roles such as intruder, ground strafing and night fighter. Steel-tube construction meant cannon shells could pass right through the wood and fabric covering without exploding. The Hurricane underwent many modifications during its lifetime, including an upgraded Merlin engine and interchangeable multi-purpose wings, staging twelve 7.7mm guns and two 40mm anti-tank guns and carrying two 500lb bombs.

Corgi's 1:72 scale Hurricanes are beautifully recreated, with simulated fabric stretched over the wings, rudder, elevators and empennage stringers. On some releases, the top engine cowling is removable, revealing details of the famous Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. Each release highlights a fighter or attack variant with tank busting cannons mounted under each wing for ground attack, or internal mounted machine guns inside the wing for air to air combat–complete with vents to eject spent shell casings. The pinned landing gear quickly locks into place for ground display.
