Default For the Week of July 22, 2012

Since we went big with the armor last week, both of our picks this week are dragon 1:72 scale pieces. In a way they are roughly the same tanks as last week. We start with the Sd. Kfz. 181 Tiger-I Mid Production, sPzAbt 508, March 1944 from OB's for $10.95.

Grab your whip & chair and then click here:

http://www.obsdiecastplanes.com/inde...roducts_id=625

Next up is our Sherman, but this one is Firefly--captured by the Germans. The Flying Mule has it for $10.95.

The pilot model of the M4 was completed in September 1941, and the Sherman became the most widely produced tank of the war. The M4 Sherman defeated heavier tanks with superior numbers, and by using outflanking tactics to strike thinner enemy flank armor. Shermans also achieved success with progressively upgunned models and by working with tank destroyers. The Sherman tank--named by the British--was fast, maneuverable, mechanically reliable, easy to manufacture, and effective in its infantry support role. It served with the US Army and Marines during World War II, and the US transferred large numbers to the United Kingdom and allied forces of many countries.

Dragon's 1:72 scale M4 Sherman is constructed almost entirely of diecast plastic, which provides for the greatest possible level of detailing. Featuring a 360-degree rotating turret with elevating cannon, this model has hatches, hinges, welded amour plating and a turret that are all stunningly accurate, and the same level of detailing has been applied to the vehicle's track system. The model's underside features forward crew escape hatch, engine compartment access panels and wheel suspension components. Additional detailing includes delicate guards that shield both head lamps and textured lenses and tail lights. Subtle airbrushed weathering with hand-painted tools and equipment add a finishing touch.

The Dragon Models "1:72 Dragon Armor Collector Series" range presents highly-detailed, ready-made plastic models of military vehicles. Dragon Armor tanks require no gluing or painting. Each model is an instant display piece or diorama centerpiece straight from the box and is 100% true to scale... these don't look like model tanks, they look like tanks!. Color, camouflage and unit markings are carefully researched for maximum authenticity, marking the difference between and authentic scale model tank and a "toy" tank.

Dragon Models "1:72 Dragon Armor Collector Series" display model vehicles feature:
  • Molded plastic construction (some releases include diecast metal components).
  • Rotating turret, elevating cannon and accurate hull.
  • Painted, fitted, non-moving tracks and detailed non-rotating wheels.
  • Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details.
  • Pad printed markings and placards that won't fade or peel like decals.
  • Clear acrylic display case to protect model.

Going to the air before the football season begins, our initial rout is to the 1:72 scale Gemini Aces Supermarine Spitfire MK. IX--USAAF 52nd FG, 12th AF--Tunisia, 1943--Lt. Ohr from Fantastic Flyers for $20.97.

All models in the Gemini Aces line come standard with the following features:
  • All Die-cast construction.
  • Photo-etched, spinning metal propellers.
  • Rolling rubber tires.
  • Movable control surfaces
  • Optional landing gear up/down configurations
  • Superior quality graphics
  • Metal stand included
The RAF allowed some of their precious Spitfires to be diverted to USAAF units during WWII. These were used extensively in European and Mediterranean Theaters of Operation.

This beautifully presented Spitfire Mk. IX wears a very unusual color scheme, but doesn't she look a picture! Of particular note are the faded US national insignia, which are bordered by a fresh application of insignia blue. This model is a must for any Spitfire collection!

Meanwhile in the air, we have spotted the Corgi 1:72 scale P-40E Warhawk Model, USAAF, "Aleutian Tigers" - Corgi AA35205 - from Showcase Toys for $29.95.

Curtiss P-40 E Warhawk - 11th FS "Aleutian Tigers", USAAF, Aleutian Islands, 1943

1:72 scale. Wingspan: 6.25" (15.9 cm)

Limited Edition

The P-40s of the 11th FS, 343rd FG were painted in a variation on the theme made famous by the American Volunteer Group (A.V.G., also known as Flying Tigers), and were known as the Aleutian Tigers. This version with a white spinner was one of the latest P-40 's to still be flying when attached to the 11th Fighter Squadron in 1943

The P-40's legacy will always be as the aircraft flown by Claire Chennault's American Volunteer Group (A.V.G or also known as the Flying Tigers). 100 P-40's (considered obsolete) were given to the Chinese in 1941. In approximately 6 months of combat the AVG officially destroyed 297 planes with another 153 probables. All of this was accomplished with the loss of only 12 P-40s

The Corgi Aviation Archive features a wide selection of high quality, ready-made, diecast model airplanes. Each model is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, using specifications of the original aircraft. Corgi models are built with diecast metal and some plastic components.

The models in the Corgi Aviation Archive series feature: realistic panel lines, a detailed cockpit with pilot figure, historically accurate aircraft markings and landing gear with rubber tires. They can be displayed with the landing gear down or 'in flight' on the included stand.

The big bird this week is the 1:48 scale Hobby Master Spitfire PR Mk. XIX, No. 541 Squadron, Benson, 1944 from Pilot Stores USA for $42.95.

Spitfire PR Mk. XIX, No. 541 Squadron, Benson, 1944 (1:48) by Hobby Master Diecast Airplanes
Item Number: HA7601 The Spitfire PR XIX was the last Spitfire with elliptical wings and was the last RAF Spitfire type in front-line service. The PR XIX was a combination of power by the Griffon engine of the Mk. XIV and the wings of the PR XI making it the fastest Spitfire. Weapons were removed to allow for larger fuel tanks in the leading edge of the wings making it possible to fly missions as far as Berlin at altitudes over 40,000 feet. By the end of production 225 XIX had been made.

The 541 Squadron was formed in October 1942 at RAF Benson, Oxfordshire, England.
The squadron used Spitfire PR XIX to carry out reconnaissance missions over Europe until the end of WWII. By late 1944 the D-Day stripes were worn on the fuselage only.
No. 541 Squadron was disbanded on October 1, 1946 but reformed November 1, 1947.
Still using the PR XIX they flew photographic reconnaissance and survey missions. The squadron continued to use the PR XIX until December 1950 when they were replaced with Meteors.

Default For the Week of August 26, 2012

For our last time around in August, we feature two Dragon King Tigers but in different scales. We'll start with the 1:72 scale King Tiger (Henschel Turret) 1/sPzAbt 101, France 1944 w/Zimmerit coating from The Toy Federation for $9.95.

1/72 Scale King Tiger (Henschel Turret) 1/sPzAbt 101, France 1944 w/Zimmerit coating
- Pre-injected Zimmerit coating
- Accurate markings and camouflage
- Highly detailed exhaust dischargers
- Elevating gun
- Realistic weathered track links

This 1/72 static die-cast model features a King Tiger mounted with a Henschel turret of the sPzAbt 101 in France in 1944.

The King Tiger, Germany's most formidable Heavy Tank, made its first appearance on the WWII theater in 1944. The first 50 tanks produced had Porsche turrets whereas subsequent tanks were equipped with the Henschel designed production turret. The King Tiger was armed with a 71-caliber 88mm gun that had enough power to penetrate 150mm thick armor from 2000m away. For protection, the chassis front armor was 150mm thick with 80mm thick side armor.

Hail to the King:

http://www.thetoyfederation.com/prod...8&cat=0&page=2

Mislabeled as being 1:72 scale is the 1:35 scale King Tiger Henschel Turret w/Zimmerit, Western Front 1945 (DRR61011) from Aviation Supermart for $47.95.

Weighing 69.8 tons, Germany's King Tiger tank entered production in mid-1944. It was an impressive vehicle, and being the final tank design to enter production during WWII, it could be seen as the pinnacle of German tank design. The King Tiger was armed with an 8.8cm KwK 43 L/71 gun and its frontal armor was up to 180mm thick. Such a formidable fighting machine had weaknesses though, since its heavy bulk and underpowered engine meant it wasn't as mobile as it should have been. Dragon Armor has launched its second fantastic fully built-up 1/35 scale model of a Tiger II. This Henschel production version of the King Tiger is based on a tank from 3./s.PzAbt 506 that fought on the Eastern Front in 1945.
Dragons 1/35 scale tank is distinctive with a full coat of Zimmerit on the hull and turret. This copy of the original antimagnetic mine paste has been carefully and realistically crafted and textured to scale. The camouflage scheme feature red-brown stripes over a yellow base, along with tactical markings painted over the Zimmerit in a most realistic manner. The designers and craftsmen responsible for this masterpiece have provided everything necessary to produce an accurate model. It even features delicately detailed engine mesh screens made from photo-etched metal. This King Tiger, a real striped big cat, is ready to spring into action!

The big cat awaits here:

http://www.aviationsupermart.com/sto...945-1-72-.html

An other of the quickly vanishing 1:48 Eagles International birds has been spotted. It is the P-51B Mustang Mk.III 1/48 Die Cast Model
Sqn. Leader Eugeniusz Horbaczewski, Polish RAF with a bonus book--RAF Mustang and Thunderbolt Aces Aircraft of the Aces Vol. 93 by Andrew Thomas. The combo can be had from Historic Aviation for $59.95.

P-51B Mustang Mk.III 1/48 Die Cast Model
Sqn. Leader Eugeniusz Horbaczewski, Polish RAF
This amazingly detailed, limited edition, 1/48 scale, die cast model of the Mustang Mk.III flown by 16½-victory ace Eugeniusz Horbaczewski - the commander of RAF No. 315 (City of Deblin) Polish Fighter Squadron in 1944 - is a real beauty!

It features engraved panel lines, a fully outfitted cockpit with an opening canopy and a figure of Horbaczewski, cowl panels that can be removed to reveal a detailed engine, movable flight control surfaces, wing-mounted fuel tanks, removable 500-pound bombs, optional-position landing gear with real rubber tires, authentic markings, a display stand, and more. 8½" wingspan.

RAF Mustang and Thunderbolt Aces
Aircraft of the Aces Vol. 93
Thomas. Two of the finest American fighters of World War II, the P-51 Mustang and P-47 Thunderbolt saw substantial service in the Royal Air Force. This book examines those aircraft and the pilots who achieved ace status flying them, including Polish aces Stanislaw Skalski and Eugeniusz "Dziubek" Horbaczewski. 96 pages, B&W photographs and color illustrations, 7¼"x 9¾", softcover.

The read and fly package can be snagged here:

http://www.historicaviation.com/prod...category=USAAF Fighters

Again we have a little brother in the 1:72 scale. This time it is the Gemini Aces replica of "Bald Eagle," the P-51B Mustang flown by Lt. Robert Eckfeldt of the 374th Fighter Squadron, 361st Fighter Group "Yellowjackets". Military Issue has it for $24.95.

A replica of "Bald Eagle," the P-51B Mustang flown by Lt. Robert Eckfeldt of the 374th Fighter Squadron, 361st Fighter Group "Yellowjackets," on June 29, 1944, when he destroyed four Fw 190s on the ground at Oschersleben Airport, this limited edition, 1/72 scale, die cast Gemini model features engraved panel lines, a detailed cockpit with a pilot figure, movable flight control surfaces, two removable wing-mounted fuel tanks, a rotating propeller, optional-position landing gear with free-rolling wheels and real rubber tires, authentic markings, and more. 6¼" wingspan; arrives ready to display on the included stand.

The Medium Tank M3 was an American tank used during World War II era. This tank was called "General Lee" named after General Robert E. Lee. Produced in 1939, the M3 Lee was the first U.S. medium tank designed with a 75mm gun. The main weapon a lower-velocity 75 mm gun was in an offset sponson mounting in the hull, with consequent limited traverse. A small turret with a lighter, higher-velocity 37 mm gun was on the top of the tall hull. The M3 Lee served proudly from 1942-1943 before being replaced by the M4 Sherman.

Our final three selections are from the Flying Mule. On the ground, we give you the 1:32 scale Unimax Forces of Valor (80202) BAE Systems M2 Bradley Diecast Model US Army for $39.95.

The M3A2 Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) is the newest version of the fully tracked, lightly armored fighting vehicle that features many advances over previous variants. New fire control, communication, and identification systems give even more lethality to the mighty fighting vehicle.

The M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle is designed to be fast; it can reach a top speed of 40 miles per hour, can cross any terrain, and transitions to amphibious mode in five minutes. It is used to scout enemy positions and transport troops into hostile territory, while simultaneously providing fire cover to troops and suppressing enemy tanks. The M2 holds a crew of three: a commander, a gunner and a driver and seven fully-equipped soldiers. The 25 mm cannon fires up to 200 rounds per minute and is accurate up to 2500 meters.

Forces of Valor's 1:32 scale Bradley is intelligently designed; the top portion of the hull and turret are constructed in diecast metal, with plastic components used in those areas requiring maximum detail. Moving parts include a 360 degree rotating turret, opening crew hatches, rolling rubber tracks and wheels with active suspension and a rear door that can be lowered to reveal interior details. A 25mm chain gun with articulating aerial gun sight pivots in unison with a 7.63 machine gun, and the turret-mounted TOW missile system has an articulating front seal and can be raised to firing position. A variety of battlefield equipment is included for enhanced display.

The Unimax "Forces of Valor" range presents affordable, ready-made diecast models of military vehicles.

Unimax "Forces of Valor" diecast vehicles feature:
  • Diecast metal construction with some plastic components.
  • Rotating turret, elevating cannon and accurate hull.
  • Moving tracks on detailed rotating wheels.
  • Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details.
  • Pad printed markings and placards that won't fade or peel like decals.

Waiting here in the desert for your order:

From Fort Worth with come arrives the 1:144 scale Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series (US33508) Boeing B-52H Stratofortress Diecast Model USAF SAC 7th BW, 9th BS, Carswell AFB, TX, March 1990 for $59.95.

The 7th BW's B-52s wore a tail stripe on which was superimposed the skull of the Texas Longhorn. Its two squadrons were primarily assigned to the strategic strike role, using the AGM-86 ALCM.

Designed to meet an Air Materiel Command requirement for a long-range, strategic bomber, the B-52 Stratofortress was first flown on April 15, 1952. First envisioned as a straight wing, six turboprop aircraft, the B-52 underwent a number of design changes before becoming the swept-wing, eight turbojet aircraft it is today. Originally built for Cold War era "deterrence" missions, this aircraft is capable of carrying nuclear weapons but in actual combat has only dropped conventional munitions. Its long service career has included Vietnam, the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan and Iraq, and it is expected to continue serving until at least 2040.

Corgi's 1:144 scale B-52s are surprisingly large and heavy, weighing in at almost three pounds. Each model includes a heavily constructed all metal display-stand for in-flight display. The series includes most production variants, from early versions with large tail fins and pivoting tail machine gun turrets to the later B-52H, with its clipped tail fin and 20mm Vulcan cannons. The engine nacelles contain both intake and exhaust details, and the cockpit windscreen is masterfully integrated. The center landing gear is keyed to provide easy configuration for ground display with a set of wing tip gear for balance.

The Corgi "Aviation Archive" range presents highly-detailed, ready-made diecast models of military and civilian aircraft. The vast Aviation Archive range has become the standard by which all other diecast airplane ranges are judged. Each Corgi model is based on a specific aircraft from an important historical or modern era of flight, and has been authentically detailed from original documents and archival library material. Famous airplanes and aviators from both military and commercial airline aviation are all honored.

Corgi "Aviation Archive" diecast airplanes feature:
  • Diecast metal construction with some plastic components.
  • Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details.
  • Pad printed markings and placards that won't fade or peel like decals.
  • Interchangeable extended/retracted landing gear with rotating wheels.
  • Poseable presentation stand to display the aircraft "in flight".
  • Many limited editions with numbered certificate of authenticity.
  • Detailed, hand-painted pilot and crew member figures.
  • Authentic detachable ordnance loads complete with placards.
  • Selected interchangeable features such as speed-brakes, opened canopies and access panels.
  • Selected moving parts such as gun turrets, control surfaces and swing-wings.

Heading the coast is the 1:72 scale Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series (AA32017) Hawker Sea Hurricane Diecast Model FAA 880 NAS, Richard 'Dickie' Cork, Arbroath & St. Merryn, Scotland, 1941 for $19.95.

The Royal Navy acquired Hurricanes to help in the Battle of the Atlantic which, in early 1940, had a steep rise in shipping losses far from shore, where land-based aircraft could not provide air cover for Allied convoys. This gave rise to the 'Hurricat', a converted Hurricane carried by CAM-ships. Hurricanes converted for such a role needed only the addition of catapult spools, and 50 Hurricane Mk I land-planes were so modified and designated Sea Hurricane Mk IA. The first of the Hurricanes and Sea Hurricanes to see service with the Fleet Air Arm arrived in February 1941 and were operating with front line unit 880 Squadron from 15 March 1941. Battle of Britain ace 'Dickie' Cork first flew W9220 on 7 April 1941 and continued to do so for several months. The Sea Hurricane Mk I were followed by about 300 Mk I's converted to Sea Hurricane Mk IB configuration, these having catapult spools plus a V-frame arrester hook: in addition 25 Mk IIA were modified as Sea Hurricane IB or Hooked Hurricane II fighters.

Based on the Fury biplane and designed by Sydney Camm as a monoplane fighter, the Hurricane was first flown on November 6th, 1935. With its wide-set landing gear, easy handling, reliability, and stable gun platform, the Hurricane was suitable for a variety of different roles such as intruder, ground strafing and night fighter. Steel-tube construction meant cannon shells could pass right through the wood and fabric covering without exploding. The Hurricane underwent many modifications during its lifetime, including an upgraded Merlin engine and interchangeable multi-purpose wings, staging twelve 7.7mm guns and two 40mm anti-tank guns and carrying two 500lb bombs.

Corgi's 1:72 scale Hurricanes are beautifully recreated, with simulated fabric stretched over the wings, rudder, elevators and empennage stringers. On some releases, the top engine cowling is removable, revealing details of the famous Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. Each release highlights a fighter or attack variant with tank busting cannons mounted under each wing for ground attack, or internal mounted machine guns inside the wing for air to air combat–complete with vents to eject spent shell casings. The pinned landing gear quickly locks into place for ground display.
